The return of the LR 88, the wife and a question...
The Land Rover 88 went in for some touching up, as they do. Unfortunately on close examination it seemed that something more drastic was needed. The chassis had had a number of repairs done to it over the years (big surprise this I know) but unfortunately some of the repairs seem to have done more damage than good. The ideal solution was a new chassis preferably galvanised. The problem with this solution being that a replacement chassis (preferably galvanised) is an expensive piece of ironmongery, without the delivery costs. Fortunately a solution was at hand.
A galvanised chassis had been purchased and a premises hired by someone of good intentions. The plan being to do a chassis up rebuild. Unfortunately for this person the lease had 4 days to go before it expired and the chassis was still sitting there. So a deal was done. I bought the chassis at a tremendous saving on the original purchase price. Of course I got permission from the Department of Finance first i.e. I asked the wife if it was O.K. to buy a chassis for the LR 88. She nodded, smiled and said yes.
Next the bulkhead. Believe it or not but the bulkhead was in serious need of replacement (hard to believe I know but there you have it). However another aborted rebuild came to light and I got an unused new bulkhead from a fraction of the cost of a new one. Bulkheads are ridiculously expensive for what they are. Another trip to the powers that be at the Department of Finance.
"Is it O.K. if I buy a bulkhead for the LR 88."
"Yes" came the reply, "What's a bulkhead"
So that was that.
So the LR 88 was duly stripped revealing more horror stories. So much for the quick touch up job. Anyway the bulkhead was sprayed as were most of the other panels separately so that there would be a matching finish in the engine bay.
I know what the chassis and bulkhead cost but I've no idea what the total cost will be as I didn't get the bill yet.
I opted for an all over colour of Limestone and I think it turned out very well. What started out as some minor repairs ended up as a chassis up rebuild Thanks to the ever agreeable and smiling Department of finance.

The engine is the testosterone inducing Land Rover designated five main bearing version of the 2.25 diesel engine. Note the new bulkhead in situ.

The wife..
It is now three and a half decades since I first saw the wife in the Great Showroom of Life.
That pristine chassis, that perfect bodywork and that imposing bulkhead. How I remember that first test drive... that first service. Ah yes happy memories. Sadly time has taken it's toll and the chassis, bulkhead and bodywork which are no longer in the condition they once were. Still the wife has always been always supportive of my ideosyncracies and vicissitudes especially where Land Rovers were and are concerned.
The question.
In order to show my appreciation and thanks to the Department of Finance (The Wife) for all the unquestioning support and smiles over the years, I was thinking of suggesting getting her chassis, bodywork and bulkhead attended to. Purely for her benefit you understand.
Or should I just send her for psychiatric evaluation to get to the root of her strange behaviour?

Ask her what she thinks of your chassis, bulkhead, suspension and whether you still have the same torque and bhp? I suspect therein may lay your answer?

I think you've done well with the 88 and that you may just be pushing your luck suggesting the same treatment for your other beloved.

Nice to see the vehicle is still marking its territory [pic 1] Steve.

That "marking it's territory" turned out to be from where the fuel return pipe entered the top of the tank. The "tightening nut" needed tightened so to speak! Thought I'd fill you in just incase it was keeping you awake at night. Laughing 1982 88" 2.25 diesel
