Removing lt230 transfer box
Hi,

Going to be removing my transfer box and gearbox tomorrow. Everything is disconnected and ready - i`ve got the floors and seat box removed and i `ve got an engine hoist.

I want to remove them seperately as i think it`ll be easier to handle and seperate reconnect,etc.

The space behind the transfer box back to the chassis cross member looked a bit tight to me to enable the input shaft off the gearbox to disengage, so i`ve removed the handbrake drum. A thought just occured to me - most of the guides on the internet show removing the input gear cover and the input gear itself to replace with a crossdrilled gear - do i need to remove the gear to take the transfer box off?

I`m not replacing the input gear at the moment as i`ll do at a later date if its worn, but thought i`d just check before i start trying to remove the transfer box and run into problems!

No, on a standard setup you don't need to remove the cover.

For future reference, you can remove the lt230 from underneath the vehicle without removing the floor, seat box etc... Unless this is part of a bigger job. It's always worth removing the brake drum and backing plate though if only to keep the weight down when handling the transfer box. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/

I removed gear/transfer box and handbrake all together in one go. Once removed I then split them, once all the bolts are undone the transfer box just slips off no need to remove anything else.

In hindsight the only thing I would do is loosen the bolts between the gear & transfer box some of these were bloody tight. We removed it through passenger door. Thumbs Up 2007 Defender Puma Tonga Green

Mike from memory I am 99% sure the input gear is a decent cross drill one...as I think I swapped it over when we installed the disco transfer box Thumbs Up

Oooo good to know you can remove it with the floors in place. I wasn't sure all of the bolts were accessible with them in.

Found my clunk culprit! Not sure how much longer this would have lasted!

Nidge - Input shaft gear was a new cross drilled gear with no wear Smile

Unfortunately i pulled my back a bit wiggling the transfer box off the gearbox - combination of tight space and an awkward position to be pulling with Sad So all done for today.

Will see how i am tomorrow but will probably have to be next weekend really i guess. Definitely putting it back together outside the car and back in as one unit. I think next i`d remove it as one aswell!

Floor and seat box stripped out - this didn`t take that long really. I had to cut off just two bolts which had rusted up.

I read a tip to cut the heads off 3 180mm M10 bolts, cut slots in the end, & wind them into the M10 bolt holes. Then you can guide the transfer box straight off or on to the gearbox. Worked like a charm for me. You were lucky the mainshaft had held. Nigel

yep - i think mine was fitted with studs on one side - unfortunately, the box was a bit stuck on them coming off, which with me tugging from the side aggravated that old back injury of mine - feeling alot better now though Smile Got a few bits to sort tomorrow, then have a mate coming round on monday night to give a hand taking the old off and fitting the new Smile

yes, glad the mainshaft didn`t go before now!
