which tyres
Been looking for a new set of rubber wanting a agressive AT for all round use I ordered a set of 265/75/16 Goodyear Duratrac however been told delivery will now be MAY Big Cry

So looking at others, got it down to BFG AT or Cooper ST MAXX

BFG every time. Immense life longevity and always got me out of that sticky field even with a trailer on!!

Having driven Landrovers on and off road for more than 30 years, i can only say that in my opinion only, BFG At's would never be my choice of rubber .... Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant.

I have driven with plenty of different tyre options over the years.

BFG AT's, BFG M/T's, Copper Zeon LTZ's, Copper STT's

The coopers I don't mind on the road, they're actually nice but in the slippy stuff I'd take the BFG's all day long.

On road the BFG's can be a little slippy on particularly greasy corners but then so can the others and mega miles off them + their performance off road makes them my number 1 all rounder!!

I've only ever owned land rovers and 1 other 4x4 so have had a varied choice and think the BF Goodridge All Terrains are fantastic. I have heard good things about the newer mud terrains though aswell which I might try next Defender puma dormobile camper

Lol too right Dave. Never on any forum will you get an unbiased opinion when anything BFG is included in the offering.

My 10p worth: Since the laws in Europe have changed regarding road noise and clear labeling on tyres (with reference to abilities in the wet and mpg, etc) all the manufacturers have had to take a long hard look at their products. The result is that there are some incredible tyres out there that are as good as if not better than the offroaders automatic favourite the BFG AT or MT.

Immediately to mind spring; Continental Cross Contact AT (now a LR stock tyre), General Grabber AT, Good Year Durace and Cooper LTZ.

Almost all of the new breed of tyres come with "self cleaning" technology, much improved siping and handling characteristics.

Really it does not matter an awful lot which of the mentioned tyres you go for as they are all very good. As with many things it will come down to your personal preference, what you are planning on doing in your Defender, how you want your Defender to look, who's opinion you listen to the most and ultimately how deep your pockets are.

My personal preference would be; Continental Cross Contact AT. I have had these on my 2002 110 CSW for 2/3 years now and they have taken everything I have thrown them at. They have a good wear rate. Low road noise. Awesome in the wet. Great in the snow. Hold the corners beautifully. They are everything I ask for in a tyre.

I have 265/75 Cooper ST Maxx. A more agressive AT than the BFG AT, but not too noisy, very strong sidewalls.

I went with them for a number of reasons -
Strong side walls and more aggressive than a usual AT, including BFG but not as aggressive as MTs.
Designed by Coopers in Australia for driving on Australian unsealed roads, which happens to be where I'm going
Price - best price I found was Craddocks. Cheaper than BFG AT.
Reasonable availability in Australia (due to point 2 above)

In addition they had to be suitable for a bit of mixed urban/rural cycle commuting in the UK - not too noisy and good in the wet, etc.

Verdict so far - really like them, have done a bit of off roading on them in the UK on grass / light mud and gravel. So far very pleased. Quiet on the road (not noticed any big difference to the Pirelli ATRs I had on before) and OK in the wet. Coped OK in snowy conditions last March. Our blog - http://landytravels.com/

STTs are Mud tyres... OP asked about All Terrains.

In general I'd say Coopers, though, are a quality tyre.

We toyed with getting STTs for our trials motor but seeing other people in our Club struggle with them in deep mud and in slippery grass, we've decided against for the moment. This seems to be because they are lacking in side lugs that other MTs usually have. The ST Maxx, on the other hand, does have side lugs.

Now if you could combine the MT pattern of the STT and the side lugs of the ST Maxx you'd have a really cracking tyre for trials! Wink Our blog - http://landytravels.com/
