United Kingdom 2016 Defender 90 Puma 2.2 XS CSW Scotia Grey
'An odd choice for a youngster', 2016 Scotia Grey 90 XS SW
Hi All, treating this a 'hello' and to start a thread on my new Defender,

I've been around Land Rovers all my life, (my mum had a discovery way back before 'the school run' caught the bug & my dad has worked at the local Dealership since I was two). So I can say I've seen my fair share of Defenders, from late 300tdi's through TD5's to the current model. This, and a diet of LRO back issues & Camel Trophy DVD's, fuelled my enthusiasm for the green oval from a young age.

After having smoked around in hatchbacks for my first three years of driving, I decided that given the Defender's imminent demise, it had to be now or never to get my hands on one of my own. Spurred on largely by the launch of the Heritage LE's (of which I unsurprisingly missed out on), I took some brave pills, dug very deep, and placed an order for the worlds most impractical car for a 20 year old!

This was back in March 2015, and knowing I wanted it for a 1st September registration, I settled down for three months (chopping & changing the spec constantly until the cut off point!).

I'd deliberated long and hard over the final spec, the colour being the main issue. Havana Brown, Montalcino Red & Fuji white all came and went, as did Recaro seats, sunroof & briefly, a winch.

The car finally arrived off a transporter earlier this week, and here it is;

2016 MY Defender 90 XS Station Wagon
Scotia Grey
Fitted with;
Carpet
Tow pack
HD Steel Wheels w/Goodyear MTR's

As can be seen from the above, less is probably more. I junked all the fripperies apart from carpets, which would probably have faced the axe as well, had it not been the only option for protecting the rear wheel boxes.

I guess now starts the agonising wait until I can register it in September, meanwhile I've been busying myself with the admin side, namely being dragged over the coals by Direct Line in pursuit of Insurance (no mean feat, as you can imagine).

In terms of plans for it, nothing too drastic, I aim to keep it largely factory standards, for reasons of originality and taste (!). However, thus far the sidesteps have come off, a la Heritage Edition, wheels are off to Lepsons in Gillingham to be resprayed, and the radio is being changed for a more user friendly Kenwood unit next week.

In the longer term I may look to stick a Safety Devices cage in it, and possibly squeeze in a centre seat in place of the cubby box. However I'll be leaving it until the LRO show has passed, where no doubt I should get food for thought.

And now, pictures;

I'll be updating more over the coming weeks, as I get assigned a plate, and finally get her on the road!

Cheers,

Andrew

Awesome motor. Wish I'd been smart enough to buy a defender when I was 20.

try the NFU for insurance, they insure plenty of young farmers in defenders, so your age shouldnt bother them too much

Nah Mate - not impractical at all! I bought my 90 when I was 21 and still have it... almost 16 years later.

You can tailor it to fit your needs over the years rather than have to keep changing cars.

+1 although only a slight age difference.
I can think of at least 5x owners under 25 off the top of my head.
Doesn't stop the nasty looks from an odd few out there though but who cares, some of us are proud to be different. Mr. Green

Because you're only 20 makes you more interesting that you've got one of these so don't think of it as a negative at all!

I was 23 when I bought my first Range Rover Classic (albeit second hand) but I thought the same at the time, it was deemed an old mans car, but I just love them.

You'll never regret it, and I'm looking forward to seeing what you do to it as your changes so far as the oppositive to what most would do.

Nice truck... I'd have had one at 17 if I could!

Also might be worth giving A-Plan a ring, site sponsor and were better than any quote I got from the online boys + they know Land Rovers. 2005 110 XS - Cairns Blue "Bertha" - Gone, and sorely missed
