Losing drive/speed but able to increase engine revs!
So I got my defender back after being in the garage for 5 weeks (long story) while it was their it was services and a leaking pinion seal on the front diff was replaced (must have been a tiny leak as there is no signs of oil).

So after having it at home and not driving it for more than 10 minutes a day until yesterday all was fine. Then the wife decided to drive it back to her parents (180 mile trip). After 20 minutes she lost power and couldn't get it over 45mph. The garage came out and claimed it was because she was in low box!
Then 20 minutes later it happens again as she was over taking a lorry on the M4 (11 month old daughter in the back!).

The RAC man can out and said straight away I can hear something binding in the drivetrain/transmission and called a low loader to toe it in Evil or Very Mad

What do we think it is?????

P.s. It went to the garage for body work and a service only it was running fine.[/s] Russell

if its been stood a while could the handbrake be stuck on a bit? difflock been in?? wont have done it much good driving around with that in?

or maybe the clutch has gone, hence the reason it revs (im guessing in gear) but doesnt go any quicker...

sorry i cant be of more help, im sure someone will be along soon with some more suggestions.

The diff isn't locked, but I was starting to think about the hand brake.

It seems to be an intermittent problem that only happens after it's been running for a while, as if something is getting too hot and expanding and causing it to bind somewhere. The clutch is probably slipping like no tomorrow as well now. Russell

maybe even a seized brake caliper? but then id expect the vehicle to vier to one side all the time... but that would not disable you from going over 45mph.

No it doesn't vier to one side, it first happened when being driven at 60 and then again when at 70! Russell

Handbrake is not a uncommon problem after a run , but if any brake binding they should be getting hot if binding and maybe a smell from them

One thing i had a while ago was pedal sticking down a bit , and that only happen after a run , might be worth trying if you can pull brake pedal up at all , when i done it there was a load click and all been fine

but if your putting your foot down and revs going up without changing gear and no increase in speed the clutch is slipping, that could be a actual clutch probem or hydraulic problem

so they garage was insisting that the issue was with the de-tent spring on the transfer box gear lever. but surprise surprise it hasn't fixed it, they now think that there is an internal issue with the transfer box. Its done 50K miles and was fine before it went in! Russell

A main dealer service used involve making sure that the gearbox was fully functioning, from my experience some fitters do not know how to obtain low box or lock the diffs, they believe that they can do it without the use of the clutch believing that that part is an auto box. It may worth checking the garage procedure's for checking the gearbox. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place,
so it doesn't take much to Censored us off.

Are you sure this isn't clutch slip or the gearbox output shaft splines?

Hi BigRuss

Thank you for your post.

I am sorry to learn of your vehicle concerns, please accept my apologies for any inconvenience or frustration that may have been caused.

Are you able to confirm if the investigating garage are a Land Rover approved retailer?

If this is not the case and you wish for Land Rover to look into the concerns with your vehicle, may I suggest visiting an approved Land Rover retailer.

Alternatively, should you wish for me to contact a retailer on your behalf to discuss bringing your vehicle in for inspection, please make me aware and I will be happy to assist.

Please PM me with your vehicle and contact details should you wish for me to assist.

Regards

Ryan

So I now have it back from the garage.

After replacing the de-tent spring, Replacing the oil (and checking for metal) the issue was discovered as the gear selector rid not being set properly. There was no sign that it had moved since it was set at the factory. It just took 5 year and 51k miles to become apartment and coincidently I had had a bad experience with a garage I'd been using problem free for almost 2 years. Russell
