Sill Chequer Plate Fitting
Hi All

I've got a set of 2mm aftermarket black chequer plate sill guards to fit this weekend (purchased from Brooklands). I've briefly offered them up to the Defender and can see they overlap the arches by 5-10mm.

So do I pop out the arches and put the guards under the arches OR do I carefully trim the sill guards for a perfect fit??

I might add I'm ever so slightly OCD so I'm already having slight heart palpitations about it not being exactly right. Smile

Tia

Barney

I'd definitely trim the chequer plate. Although you'll need a very fine jigsaw blade Neutral

This is my current thinking. I'm relatively handy so the trimming doesn't worry me too much. But, will the surface finish in the future be compromised by the cut edge?

I was also thinking it would be worth priming the drilled holes in the sills of the Defender (top and bottom) to prohibit corrosion.

Perhaps also a silicon bead to aid bonding and reduce chance of rattles?

Am I over thinking this???

Don't silicone it. Buy some sticky backed closed cell foam and stick it to the back of the chequer plate before install.

And definitely cut your plate. It will not fit behind the arches 2002 110 td5

Not over thinking it at all, it's got to be right. Will you need to touch up the black on the cut edges?

I have just fitted a pair on my 90.
You definately need to trim.I used a 110mm disc cutter with a 1mm blade, cuts ally like a hot knife through butter, but you will need to file & sand the burs off the cut edges, then paint the raw edge black.
I also drilled a couple of extra fixing holes on the top & under side lips for extra security. Then attached with black head rivets.
Marc.

Shame because I have an OEM take off set of sill chequerplate still attached to my sills sat in my garage doing nothing that would have fitted perfectly. Removed for the fitting of R & T sliders some time ago. Not black though. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!!

Great minds think alike. I've trimmed mine up today using a metal cutting disc on the dremel. Then I've touched in with an artist brush and satin hammerite.

I'll fit them tommorow. I'll try to remember to take a couple of pics to upload.
