90 soft top and an oz tent.
Hi Guys,

SWMBO has decided that she wants a 90 Soft top and is planning to have a 300TDi rebuilt by a local Land Rover specialist Very Happy . So at this stage anything is possible. Trouble is, we want to be able to do some short term camping using our OZ Tent RV4 whilst in Spain

The problem is, how do we transport it? We have thought of an external roll cage to enable the fitting of a roof rack, but when the tilt is off this would look a bit naff with all the extra metal work as well as adding considerably to the cost of the rebuild. I suppose we could hang it out the back with a red flag/long length board (as used on cycle carriers)?

So, any ideas to throw in the mix?

Thanks,

Chris 2010 Defender 110 Station Wagon, Santorini Black.

Presume this is a full length soft top. Personally I'd get a roll cage of some sort fitted, for safety reasons, otherwise your vehicle will provide no occupant safety zone in the event of a roll. At minimum I'd have a combo of a front hoop and rear bulk head hoop.

The soft top will need its sticks and front door/roof fittings anyway, and so when you fold the soft top back these are exposed or you have to take them off and leave them somewhere.

So if you get a cage, esp full length, then you can have a custom soft top made which will use the rear hoops as its support and use a combo of press-studs and cords to fix it all down. The roll cage would then provide a ready made roof rack and you could store your oz tent up there. One of the reasons we didn't even consider an Oztent was that the length of the pack size isn't very practical when you have a 90.

The other thing to consider would be swopping your RV for a Jet-tent as you can store this inside the cargo space. Our blog - http://landytravels.com/

or a JV special edition which comes in two bags and I reckon they might fit in a 90 as the largest bag is 1.6m long. Or as Pam says get a roll cage and stick an ozbasket on it.

Thanks for the input, This is the way we were thinking Pam, the best option may be to get something like a Safety Devices roll cage to go over the whole cargo area, to, as you say, give roll over protection which would also, of course, provide a base for an OZ Tent carrying basket, We could then, perhaps, get netting to go under the roll cage when the tilt was removed?

Our other vehicle is a 110 CSW with full length roof rack so hence the Oz Tent no carrying problems there - perhaps we'll have to go in convoy Laughing

Hi Chris

We got our perfect tourer / overland Defender all sorted out - happy with choices, not a huge amount of room, but then again enough for the 'needs' if not all the 'wants' !

Then, after confirming it was all good choices after our 4.5 month camping trip around Oz, we went mad and got a dog and have had to have a complete re-think as Skye now takes up half the load space! Rolling Eyes The 90 means too much to us to swop for a bigger vehicle so we had to get a trailer to fit the other half of the gear in. Having the trailer now means though that those items on the 'wants' list that got left behind before can now accompany us on our next trips! Very Happy Our blog - http://landytravels.com/

PS.

You could use roof bars across the roll cage to carry stuff, if required or you can use some universal mounts. These were supplied for our cage from the manufacturers (Performance and Protection) and have a clamp that goes around the cage, then a straight bar that you can affix your bits and bobs too. We have used these to mount our roof tent onto the roll cage. Our blog - http://landytravels.com/
