New HSX LED rear lights
Just spotted these online. A new LED rear light set for stop/tail and indicator (which also has a reverse light in the same unit)

They are pretty cheap and to my eyes decent looking (they don't have that dotty individual LED look that most aftermarket LED units have).

Sadly they are not E marked and as far as I understand that makes them illegal despite the seller saying "These lights are not E Marked but will pass an MOT."

Anyone seen these in the flesh or fitted them?

Not that I'm a tight Yorkshireman but £13.74 delivered from their website Whistle

They look great but don't think they would work on my black defender

Cheers

Basically all vehicle obligatory lights have to be type approved which means E marked these days. If your obligatory lights are not E marked they are basically ILLEGAL to use on the public highway.

The MOT is a basic annual safety check to check that your vehicle is safe to be on the road. It does not check if your lights are road legal i.e. E marked at this moment in time. Will that change in the future?

So whereas the statement 'not E marked but will pass a MOT' is factually correct it is highly misleading as they are illegal to use on the public highway.

They are cheap, might explain a lot.

However if you actually get pulled by the police, vosa etc would they be still so cheap? Have you read the small print of your insurance policy? I have not, but am sure that there would be a clause that you have to keep the vehicle legal, roadworthy, etc. What about declaring all modifications? Would your insurance company be happy with illegal modifications? Imagine a serious accident, vehicle lighting is called into question and on inspection by loss adjuster your lights are found to be illegal?

Silly question, if your vehicle was made pre E marking does that make it exempt?

Not that I want to change my standard lights but just a thought as I'm not sure my obligatory lights have e marks on them or not. Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

Agree totally Brendan. Done some reading and the MOT test looks at only a small part of the construction and use regulations. E marking is needed on 1986 onwards vehicles. Fitting these on newer is illegal and I reckon not worth the risk which is a shame because another option might be nice.

Thanks all
