Is there more than one Double DIN size head unit?

I'm looking to upgrade the head unit in my Defender and have bought the double DIN dash as seen in many posts on here (bought from TMD). However, the Pioneer head unit I've bought separately doesn't fit - or rather I can't get it to fit; are there different sized double DIN head units, or have a got a dud dash panel?

I've seen a few posts on here referring to a 'busman' double DIN panel, which will suit my purpose really well because I don't like the additional switch panel that came with my kit with the un-necessary gauge hole; I'd rather have the hazards in the bottom right hand side to replace the 12v socket.

Any suggestions very much appreciated...

In what locations doesn't it fit? Or are we slaking just too big or too small?

Busman was a member here - I don't believe he makes the double din dash anymore

You need to remove the bracket that holds the old single din stereo at the back

Also you may need to slice the bottom of the clock off

And the vent pipes may need bending back

I've since had a call from TMC. I didn't realise that you have to fit the stereo, then fit the panel; I thought the panel went in, then the head unit went in to the panel.

I'll have another look this evening armed with this info. It should make it easier as there will be more room to work around getting all the other cables in the back of the head unit (DAB aerial, SAT aerial, reversing camera, sub-woofer, etc). Would have been handy if there had been instructions supplied....

That's not entirely true.

You don't fit the stereo in the dash and then put the trim over the top, you fit the stereo to the trim from behind, (rather than through the front as you were trying to do) and then the trim with stereo attached is fitted to the dash.

It is a tricky job and will take you some time to do and get right.

Thanks Go Beyond - will set plenty of time aside. Luckily, I've not sold my car so the Defender's not required and is sitting on the drive with its dash ripped out at the moment!
