When to replace the Clutch
How do I know it is time for a new clutch. Presently I get a clunky rattle when I start and switch off the engine. Have been told that the death of the clutch on a Puma would be sudden and it won't go thru the slipping phase. Don't want to get stranded but also don't want to go for a replacement unless I absolutely have to.

Just had the clutch changed on my 2013 90 for exactly the problem you describe.

Strange thing is I did not hear it but the dealers picked it up when it was in for a service.

Apparently on mine you could only hear the noise with your foot off the clutch when you started it, I always start mine with the clutch depressed, this is why I probably did not hear it - or I have gone deaf Rolling with laughter

I started to get slip on mine, but it was more or less imminent at the time of going too. So first sign of it get home if you can and park it or in my opinion it will go completely.

In my experience a Puma driven plate lasts about 50k miles before the permanent set on the springs becomes sufficient to warrant replacement. Much above that and you start to run the risk of a spring falling out and making for a much larger bill.

The latest plates are better than the early ones but the springs still take on a permanent set and rattle, eventually falling out if the plate isn't replaced.

Mine went at about 40k, I must say in my opinion they should last at least 60k but they don't.
Having said this, after learning to drive on it that may be part of it.

So where do you guys get them replaced? Do you go indi, main, or self service.
Mines on an 11 plate with no problems at the moment ( i shouldn't tempt fate) but all advice for me is a learning process... Thumbs Up

I had my clutch and clunk addressed by Guy Salmon and have just had the paperwork these are they replaced

So it appears it was my gearbox to transfer box shaft that had the play

after about 500 miles the clunk and rattle have not yet come back DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

it was pretty much there all the time unless I was very gentle , I'm not sure if it developed or was there when new I tended to be gentle with it all the time anyway and thought it was normal until I took it to Guy Salmon for the noisy clutch, their tech said it was not normal and they chose to do it with no pressure from me, but it is definitely much tighter in the drive line now. Thumbs Up to GS Cov from me.

ps another well known dealer whom I brought it off and serviced it said it was normal, they were right it was the normal failure mode DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

DIY. Quick, not difficult to do, you know the work's been done properly, and you can do other related jobs (lubricating output shaft splines etc) at the same time.

Best of all you're not forking out £50 to £100 per hour to someone who doesn't really care!

Mine was done under warranty although out warranty I had complained whilst still in warranty and had e/mails to prove so LRCS on here gave authority. If it wasn't I would have done it myself but used the Ashcroft parts, that is what I will do if it recurs. DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,
