This does seem quite likely to me.
It takes five years to develope a new vehicle. In the first two years, the styling of the body, packaging, ergonomics, technical layout take shape. At the very latest, some 2 1/2 years before the vehicle goes to market, the car is already signed off. Body, interior, engine drivetrain and so on. Then prototypes are built, and are driven, camoflaged but in real everyday environment. Modified and improved until they work like they should. During, and after this phase, the industrialisation takes place. Tools are made and tried out. Production methods modified until they are efficient. Any change to the design and concept, later than 2 1/2 years before produciton, costs millions in modifying or making new tools. Test vehicles using the body from a current or similar model (current Defender or a D4) are rarely used these days, as they only help the development of the drivetrain, and only at an early stage. Up until now there hasn´t been a single sighting of a Defender shaped prototype. The shots of the Jaguar F-Pace, which reportedly comes to market in 2016, were already in the press in late 2014. In this modern age of dash cams and CCTC, the prototypes always turn up somewhere. From the first sighting of 90 and 110 DC100/Defender like camoflaged prototypes, start counting two years..... 1998 Tdi 90 SW, 2008 Td4 90 SW, 2012 2.2 90 SW, 2" raised Trailmaster/Terrafirma Heavy Track Raids, 255 MT´s, Recaro CS´s, anorak, wellingtons |

I would not buy one of the first ones as LR seem to get their customers to test new vehicles for them

We can hope that LR have muzzled Gerry.... on the launch of the 3 special editions we had the following;

Does a Vehicle Line Director have anything to do with design; or is he all about the manufacturing of the final product? More news here http://www.autoevolution.com/news/new-land...3107.html# suggesting that "the new Land Rover Defender will arrive in 2016 strictly as a concept vehicle, with production slated to commence in late 2017 or early 2018." more worrying for those that did not like the DC100 it will be "borrowing an estimated 70 percent of the 2011 Land Rover DC100 Concept’s styling cues." For me it was the bulbous rounded front end of the DC100 that was most offensive.

Wrong! How many defenders never see dirt. How many are kitted out with plush interiors for owners to adampt the style to a less utilitarian purpose? How many references to the Defender on non car related design + style Pintrest pages... and so on and so on. I think you will find most defender owners and fan's love the aesthetic style of the current car. One simple corner, or straight line on the exterior of a current defender has more design sophistication than anything on the DC100. End of story. The DC100 is an industrial design for industrial designers. Do we need another Evoke wannabe? And again from Gerry McGovern - "What we are working on is something that will be more desirable to look at – the traditionalists might not like it but they’ll have to live with it." Again that is wrong. Simply if the traditionalists don't like they wont have to live with it, because they simply wont by one. Why would you? I presume the new car will be aimed at a new consumer reading his point of view. It would be disappointing if the sentiment is: traditionalists be damned and good riddance? I hope not. I see 10 times more modern Triumph Bonneville's on the road than I do of their half dozen other models combined. I find that an interesting view of traditionalists. |

I agree! And I couldn´t agree more with Black Puma´s point. The Defender HAS sold on its appearance, and continues to do so. More so than ever, in fact.
