TD5 1999 Occasional Non-Startet
"Help", My 1999 td5 Defender won't start every now and then. It's had a new battery last year, and everything appears to,power up okay.
I'll start it on the key fifty odd times with no problem, then on the odd occasion it won't turn on the key at all.
The lights come on the dash, the glow plugs etc, and you can hear a buzz from the fuel pump, but nothing further.
I'm thinking immobiliser, however, when I bump start it, it starts up no problem and will then will start with the key again for several days.
When it fails to start, the temp gauge doesn't hit max as ,mentioned on several threads here, so at a loss at the moment.
Thinking it might be the key, but, surely it shouldn't bump start, or even a loose connection.
I don't know, my heads done in and I've started taking my bike with me everywhere I go so I can make it to work... Big Cry

It could be the ignition circuit wire on the starter motor, when and if you have the problem again try pulling the small wire with the spade end off the starter and put it back on again. If there is some corrosion on the contact then that action will re-establish the connection. Another thing may be the contacts inside the solonoid on the starter which can be replaced for less than a tenner. The only difficult part of the job is the different sized nut (15mm) holding and hiding at the back of the starter motor.

As above, if it clicks when not starting it's probably solenoid which is an easy job.

Thanks JWL and MK1, will try and have a close look at the starter wiring, it definitely doesn't click when the key turns, it's just dead, apart from the dash lights. Come back Series 3, all's forgiven.

Managed to get under the motor today and could see straight away that the spade clip and terminals were covered in oil from a slight leak on the bell housing.
A good clean, and brush, and the problems sorted, thanks for help JWL and MK1 Bow down
