My 110 has a standard tow bar/ball set up from the factory.
I have seen the LR part DB slider for ~£200 this replaces the current set up. Is it possible to just supplement my current set up with a generic DB slider? Are you intending to just bolt it on to the crossmember? I think if you did this, it'd be ok for any load that is directly in line with the crossmember, which whould negate the reason for having a drop hitch.
Once you drop the hitch down below the level of the crossmember, you'd need the additional support legs that brace the drop hitch to the chassis legs. An engineer will be able to explain the forces and which way they're acting, but if you put the load below the level of the bolts and apply a forward motion, as in a braking vehicle with trailer hitched, you're placing huge forces on the bolts holding it on to the crossmember. Hope this makes sense. You can usually pick up a proper drop hitch towbar on ebay or off a breaker |

Not a drop hitch, but same effect if you only tow one trailer at a set height.

Again, I presume you'll be wanting to mount a towball lower than the bottom of that plate? I think bottom line is that you shouldn't have the towball mounted lower than those two lower arms that brace to chassis legs. If you can manage to hitch whatever you need within those limits you'll be ok. I guess you can't though, hence the need for a drop hitch?
Buy the proper one and sell yours on? |

There's a recent post about these on the OEM rear step bumper and there's a Nakag.... part that lowers the ball direct.

However, I am unclear where the measurements are taken from to make these 90mm or 160mm lower - is it the lowest bolt hole on the backing plate? A diagram would help!  |
