What do I really need?
So I have a 53 td5 90 and I have had remap 1 done, egr blanking plate and centre box off exhaust.. But do I need a larger intercooler, silicone hoses etc? I only got te remap to get rid of power lag, egr blanking for a smoother ride, and centre box removal to make it sound good Cool but I'm not too fussed about speed, just making the engine work well and as efficiently as a defender can!

Any ideas on what I should do next? A Defender... Mans best friend, never judges, trustworthy (most of the time), go anywhere, do anything, looks the business, and mans biggest money pit!!!

Yes the name for my 90 is Derrick!

You don't need the hoses and intercooler on that set up.

For peace of mind I would take the exhaust manifold off, get it skimmed flat and replace with decent studs.

Doing that will hopefully stop the dreaded manifold warp Thumbs Up

TD5 exhaust manifolds are not heat stressed from new and have a tendency to warp. This is made worse after a remap as the exhaust gas temp tends to be higher. When it warps you get a screeching sound and the movement can snap the studs in the block. Pots 1 and 5 are the areas to watch, easily spotted by the black staining that appears on the block.

The manifold tends to only warp once so a lot of people wait until it happens but you can be unlucky and get the snapped studs before you can get it sorted out. If you get it skimmed now it may have done all the warping it is going to do and fitting upgraded studs from JE or Wurth will hopefully stop them snapping if it does move again.

Bob,
Why would you skim a manifold that hasn't warped yet?
If it warps after you've skimmed it you'll only have to do it again.
I would agree with upgrading the bolts, and skim the manifold if it isn't flat.

I've seen a few this has happened to, but luckily not mine.
That's probably jinxed it!

I've done all you first mentioned plus fitted a larger intercooler and better hoses, it's not something that's a necessity but it definitely helps the engine breathe easier, I did it because I was doing everything else at the time, plus a mate offered to buy my old intercooler and hoses for £75.
I think it helps with the longevity of the engine more than anything, and mines a very low mileage vehicle so I thought I'd like to keep it in good condition.

I do agree, why fix something that ain't broke. If I was going to the effort of changing the studs I would get the manifold skimmed. It may have warped to some extent already and the skimming will help.

Having now seen a couple that have broken the studs in the block and the grief the owners went through to sort them out I think I would go with the proactive option. Hopefully, if it does warp further, the studs will still be in one piece.

R.e warped manifold,I think the mod done BEFORE it warps is to "de-web" the manifold,or cut the bits out between the manifold pipes,I assume to help heat dissipation.Either way,I think the manifold has to come off,unless you have access to the outer ones. Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.

Ref warped manifold, I've been looking into this and it sounds like a good idea to sort it before it happens, I've found a bloke on eBay that offers a 'performance' manifold that's been skimmed and had the webbing removed for £175, sounds a bit pricey but if the one he's skimmed had warped and then been skimmed it's unlikely to happen again, could be more than worth the money? Has anyone used this or know of a good place to get this done?
It also sounds like people swap the soft L/R studs for Wurth Mercedes studs and copper nuts, anyone?
