Bothy near the Bomb Hole on Strata Florida
Has anyone ever stayed at the Bothy? I fancy do it in the summer, but wondered where people have parked as getting to it would involve off-piste? Craig Rogers

X-Isle, I have no idea what on earth you are talking about. Whistle

Sounds fun though, 'off-piste' always does... Thumbs Up Monsieur Le Grenadier

Why would you want to drive to it. It is only a few yards off the lane!

A bothy is a disused building that is open for wild camping. There's a few in the UK, especially in Scotland and Wales.

Strata Florida in case you don't know is a true classic greenlane in Wales. I've never driven it, but I have cycled some of it and fancy driving it, staying at the Bothy (http://www.mountainbothies.org.uk/bothy-details.asp?bothy_id=100) and doing some nighttime photography.

Same here, I didn't stay in it, but have biked all around Wales (up until last year I ran MTB Holidays) and have fancied staying in the Bothy. My MTB bikes can't carry luggage and don't fancy taking my Touring bike there, so the Landy it has to be! Smile

It's not the access, it's parking, I fancy staying overnight there, so was wondering where to park up near. I don't really fancy parking away from the Bothy, but can't see the best way to park outside (if possible). I know there is the fireroad that goes past the other side of it which is accessible slightly to the north of the lane but was wondering if anyone has actually done it. From memory, you can drive to it directly from the lane and park outside, but I suspect this is very frowned upon.

I can imagine that it's a pretty dark sky at night (providing it's clear) so night sky photography would be awesome. Craig Rogers

Out the front is usually very very wet! I wouldn't strat off the lane, you'll sink.

Fire road to rear is doable.

Thumbs Up The Bothy page does say to just ask for permission to use the fireroad, so a simple email will hopefully do the job. Craig Rogers

X-Isle, Just had a look at your "Bothy" Link..... Absolutely lovely.
I've never heard of the term before, but they looked so good, that I called Wifey in to look at them.
We're both English, and she immediately said" "Bothy"?, that's what my Mum said she lived in during the War"!!. Wifey's Mum was in the Women's Land Army during WW11, working on a Country Estate, & obviously lived in a "Bothy",...... but I'd never heard of the term before today!
Amazing what you can learn on this Forum!
Pickles.

Isn't it Scottish origin word?

It's not disused but it's a sort of communal building that can be used by anyone needing shelter from weather in mountains. Get them in Scotland in the Highlands. The idea being if you rock up at 10pm you can get a fire on for warmth. Some etiquette rules about restocking firewood etc.

Yeah, you're bang on there. I was just generalising as these days they are usually disused buildings put to good use!

I stayed in it may years ago .

We helped transport building materials up to it so the building could be repaired . Its a good 200m away from the lane .

The part of Tywi Forest that Strata Florida runs through is a Forestry Commission forest, so you'd need to apply to them for permission to drive up the forest road to the bothy if desired.

The FC in Wales got merged and are now part of Natural Resources Wales, so give them a shout. If I recall correctly it's managed out of the Llanymddyfri district office.
