Unimog axles have the wrong diff offset so not only require MAJOR work to fit, they require MAJOR work to hook them up. The lighter C303's have the same offset as LR but are rare as hens teeth and gearing makes things a bit interesting.

Unless you plan on running into the Russian/Australian wilderness any time soon, there's no need for them IMO. I looked into portal axles conversions as well as bolt-on conversions for some time and whilst they are indeed about, unless you're an avid explorer of the unexplored areas of the world, you'll never gain much from them and just experience the constant downers of them.

One thing to remember ... Break something in your Rovers, you'll probably get up and running reasonably quickly. Brake something in Mogs or 303's, you're probably going to have to walk the rest!

Break something in your Bolt-Ons, not only have you spent best part of £10,000, you'll be waiting for parts from Europe, no matter where you are in the world!

You must do some seriously extreme stuff!

Dont get me wrong, vanity wise, they look pretty trick. In 'some' circumstances, they are probably reasonably useful. But in 95% of situations, they'd not get you any further than properly set-up Rovers (or Salisbury).

I don't completely agree. I agrre on the technical side but if you get stuck 9 out of 10 times you are hanging on your diffs. So portal axles makes sense. Roel

Positively agree. I don't dispute that Smile.

But look how far you can get on Rovers. And I'm still sure with saying that 95% of the time you'd get just as far with properly setup up Rovers and wheel/tyre combo than you would with portals!

Still... Would love to have portals on a play thing.

Does that require you to be a member before reading?

Is there a synopsis of the issues?

Yeah well, if someone likes it...
Maybe over half of us don't even need the Defender at all and would be better off driving a VW Up! anyways. Mr. Green

Look here - description of the whole story of 130 on portals. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

sorry, did not realise the member thing for reading the AULRO site. But as grizz mentioned the bloke gave up and converted back after one too many breakdowns. After taking part twice in the RFC I was looking into portals. Guess what...I went for GU axles. m

I really love them Hutchinson wheels... Don't think they'd look right on my 90 or fit over the brakes but if I ever build a 110 or 130 I'm having them

Thanks Thumbs Up

I had some spare time yesterday so actually registered - not a painful or lengthy process - and whipped through some of the posts. There appeared to be several engineering issues. It's a shame the offer of the upgraded military spec portals couldn't be followed up on as that would have been interesting.

What is RFC & GU axles?
