Rally Style Mud Flaps
Every time I've gone laning, I expect to come back a mud flap lighter, so far, been lucky but they do tend to drag a lot.

I was going to remove them (still might) but then thought that the issue isn't the fact that they are fitted, but the fact that the genuine ones are quite firm and stiff and I'm guessing that most of the damage done to the brackets (and bodywork on a 110) are due to them not being very flexible.

Has anyone fitted Poly or Diaprene flaps to their original brackets? These would probably bend enough to help avoid damage? Craig Rogers

Yeah, seen those and are pretty trick, but not to cause any offence, they are crazy prices for just some brackets. Craig Rogers

Thumbs Up That's what I was thinking, albeit Diaprene as it's thinner and more flexible.

As I'm removing my XS steps and replacing with sill replacement Rock/Tree sliders, the front mud flaps are now more prone to damage as the step will no longer help protect them. Craig Rogers

I pull mine up when I'm on a greenlane, that's the mud flaps! I've put a piece of stainless steel on each one and lift them with a stretch strap. The mud that flies off is amazing, it usually lands on the third car behind me. Since I've fitted them I've never lost a mud flap and now I wish I hadn't said that. See:

I think there is a previous thread on here about this.

Got the Gwyn kit on mine and think it's great. It is expensive, but it does contain, very good quality mud shields to protect your chassis and rear loom, rear quarter reinforcement pieces, every nut and bolt, plus spares, and very good clear instructions. Not just two bracket for remounting mud flaps Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Can anyone confirm if there is a Gwyn Lewis quick release set available for a 90? I don't see it listed on the website for some reason.

I too when greenlaning (and if I don't forget) pull up the flaps.
I lost one once and found that the problem is: you fit bigger tyres, you get stuck, you reverse and essentially drive on them thus ripping them off.

The way I did it is:
Treaded rivet in the crossbeam, screwed an eye into it.
Drilled holes in flap, screwed an eye into it (large washers on both sides).
Connect a piece of thin chain with a screw-close shackle on both ends.

Works perfectly.

Just out of interest, what do people do with the front mud flaps?

These are the ones I tend to catch more than the rears when coming off a bump/rock.

Is it a case of as the Glyn Lewis brackets move the flaps closer to the wheel then catching them is avoided. Doesn't it then cause a problem of reversing when the flaps are caught as they'll invert and you will run over them? Craig Rogers

The key is dont get stuck, so no need for reverse Whistle Whistle

On a more serious note, I've not had problems with the front ones being pulled off with the Gwyn kit, I think this is due to two things, the mud flap is much better mounted than standard, it's also stronger as it's now curved due to the brackets so more rigid and keeps out the way.

Don't think Gwyn does rear removable set for 90 as they are not needed so much, as flap is further away from wheel, and if they did get pulled off would not cause the body damage that pulling a 110 one of could do. .

Very true, although sometimes with the turning circle of the Defender, you need to backup to get around a sharp narrow corner. Craig Rogers

Mine does a fair amount off the tarmac and has mudflaps all round. The rears are genuine but the fronts are Britpart special, I have had the fronts snap off mainly due to their flimsy quality. I replaced a front late last year with a genuine LR one and the next time I went off road I really noticed the difference as they are a lot tougher and has less flex and as such it took me a few minutes to work out what the grinding noise was from underneath, it was the mudflap rubbing on the ruts and the bodywork was acting as a soundbox and making it sound worse.
I will continue to use the cheap ones as they are cheap and flex a lot more, I've only ever ripped one off by reversing, I run 265/75's on 8 spoke rims that put the tyres in about the same place as alloys and 30mm spacers and the one occasion was when the particular wheel was way up in the wheelarch on rocks and I had to go back to make another run. The other saving grace about the cheaper ones is that they will give first and not rip the mounting brackets off.
I'm all for putting the weakest link in the easiest place to replace Thumbs Up

Ive got some mudflap relocators on my 90. would highly recommend. Great quality. They actually relocate it from the bottom of the crossmember and onto the rear face of it. This makes them about 0.5" back and 1" up which makes a big difference in catching them. You can also now easily unbolt them from the vehicle. Cheap too at £25. I have combined them with the corner protectors.
