Puma engine fuel issue
hi there
My 110 dcpu suffered a failure on the M40 that may be something common to other owners . Its a 2013 model with 76k miles on it and I was towing a trailer with a mini digger (total 2.4 tonnes) and it literally just died on me - no engine management lights,etc. It was taken to the dealers and it was a failure of 3 fuel injectors. It has always had "premier" brand fuel and never been used off road or in fact had towed anything previously. Not sure if this has been discussed before, but when it happens it does sound like a major component failure - ie very expensive. It seems that some Disco 3 have had the same problem.
To cap it all, the Enterprise replacement car - 63 plate Freelander HSE - packed up as well last night!! So no fan of LR products at the moment. Big Cry

Any idea what caused the simultaneous failure of three injectors? Sounds very strange indeed to me!

just an update!
The vehicle is still at the dealers and the injectors were a red herring! Its a long story but it seems there was no compression in one of the cylinders so told its either a failed cylinder head or a complete engine change. Thankfully still in warranty but I need a vehicle with a tow bar and its now 10 days waiting for LR Assist "provider" to source one. I am not a happy chappy !

I wondered where it had gone, I was thinking you've not replaced it with an evoque. Rolling with laughter

I'm still tring to get my head round the 76K miles on a 2013 Shocked

Actually I had a Freelander which broke down the next day with a intercooler pipe failure and this was replaced by a shiny white Evoque which is now replaced by a Discovery. With the Defender in the dealers for "quite a time" I may go through all LR product range !

My money is on the 'becoming more common by the day' 2.2 oil pump failure Shocked
Apparently there are no symptoms until the engine dies.

If it is then it will probably be a new engine.

Bob- you may be right with your diagnosis. The dealer did seem to think it may end with an engine change out, but obviously they are not discussing the cause. My problem is that I have paid a deposit for a MB product with the Defender as part exchange. Obviously the Defender is going to take a long while so either I dont trade it in and try and sell it privately or I get LR to buy it back as its not fit for use - its broken down 7 times during my ownership!

LR seem to be playing a game with the oil pump issue for some reason. I have heard of many oil pump failures on the 2.2, just have a read of some of the posts on this forum or push your dealer to see how many they have seen. It is becoming more common now as the vehicles clock up more miles.

Why LR have not done a recall is a bit of a mystery, maybe the cost of the recall is more than the cost of the engine replacements but surely that must reverse in time as more engines have to be replaced ?

What concerns me is the fact that if you have a 2.2 as a keeper and there is no recall are you sitting on a time bomb and a very expensive bill if the pump fails out of warranty ?

I keep thinking that an email to Watchdog about the problem may kick LR into a proactive approach but would they be interested in such a problem with a low sales volume vehicle ?

Here is the recall number from Ford for the same issue taken from a Transit forum

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Not widely known but if you have a 2.2 ford euro 5 engine in your mk7 transit or custom transit, also fitted to peugeot boxer and citroen relay and in landrover (not just defender as its fitted to freelander in certain countrys and evoque)
Model/Variant Assembly Plant Affected Build Periods (inclusive dates)
Transit -- Kocaeli from 1/10/2011 to 4/10/2013
3S549 - Transit Puma Oil Pump
Affected vehicles will be identified on OASIS. This Service Program is limited to only those vehicles that have been identified as high mileage usage / or with specific drive cycle conditions, within the build range shown below.
So if yours has recently blown up and it has service history you might be in with a chance of getting a new engine from ford or if you already paid the cost you might also get something back but only if a main dealer has fitted the new engine..
for those already with a euro 5 make sure its serviced on time and maybe do a mini service in between and this isn't just a minor job either or something which slowly goes it just all of a sudden goes, any knocks or rattles from the engine get it looked at now more than next week..
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Good luck with getting it sorted quickly.

bob- many thanks for this. It sounds very likely that this is the same issue. It is very worrying if you keep the Defender when the issue crops up outside warranty. It must be related to mileage as it certainly spent 90% of its life on motorways with no extreme towing,etc.
I am going to progress it directly with LR customer care - a type of "death wish" I know !!

A quick update!
Got a phone call from the dealers and LR technical team have approved the installation of a new engine !I couldnt get an official reason but it seems that it was an oil pump issue/failure. Once thats done they then need to sort the clutch problem out. Anyway, more miles on the Enterprise Disco ! This is engine is worrying especially if it fails outside warranty. They have another Defender in with the same problem !!!!! Big Cry

I should have put some money on that being the problem Laughing

Hopefully your new engine will have a modified pump and all will be well.
