Interior Storage For 110 Hardtop
Hi everybody,
I'd like to share my project about a closet to fit rear end of a hardtop defender 110.
Hopefully it would be helpful for anybody who is preparing his vehicle for expedition.
I'm the second owner of my vehicle. Ex-owner has used her for a tour around the world in the past.
And so many preparations have been done already. Drawer boxes, special boxes etc but all of them were made from wood.
Although i like wood as a material but i think that it doesn't stick to the spirit of land rover.
So aluminum is chosen as material. I made the plans accordingly.
First of all, i took out all the boxes.

And side trims are removed.

Then measurements of panels taken from inside. According to these measurements a 3d model has been created to work on for further stages.

According to me, hinged doors are headaches especially at limited areas that every cm3 matters.
So shutters will be used instead. And special U shaped rails to guide them.

Later on, drawings plotted on cupboards are used to see whether side panels of the closet will fit or not.
Mistakes noticed as usual and been corrected. After few trials, measurements are fixed and sent to an autocad file.

Meanwhile 1.000x2.000x2,5mm 3 plates have been purchased from a supplier. Plates are not chosen as checkered by purpose.
Two of the plate has been transfered to a workshop equipped with laser cutting and press brake machines.
The result of laser cutting was wonderful. From the other plate, shelves and other necessary parts were cut and bent.

To fix side panels to the body, rails and shelves to the side panels, pop up rivets are used.

With 3 shelves for each side closet, sufficient storage volume is gained. At one side, two of the shelves are not fixed by purpose.
They can slide upwards and long equipments like camping chairs and tables could fit there.

I’m not sure if the inside dimensions of 5 door SW 110 or 3 door 90 are same with 110 hardtop but i can share the autocad file with anybody who asks for.
So feel free to contact.

Good job, very clever idea with the roller shutters. Not quite ready to prep the back of my 110SW but when I do I am sure the CAD will come in very useful, so thank you for the offer.

Good luck with the rest of the work.. Thumbs Up Monsieur Le Grenadier

Really appreciate the quality of the workmanship gone into this BUT, a friend of mine had a very similar setup and those roller type doors rattled so badly they nearly drove him insane... Maybe yours are a different type?

Thanks jomara and need4speed for your input.
Actually it has been few weeks that i've been using it and no rattling noise noticed.
The guiding channels have special grooves for wick kind of material. So there is no metal to metal touch occurs, at least for now Wink

Hi Steven,
I've sent the model and drawing files.

Regarding the rattling questions;I hope the attached photos showing the details on the shutter pieces and the wick material inside the groove of the rail would help you to figure out the precautions that have been taken.

Hi Schweps. That is a super job mate. I absolutely agree that doors inside a confined space like the back of a Defender are an absolute PITA.

Like a few other folks on here I am also working on a storage solution to fit my needs, and those of our dog whilst travelling. The darned things take up so much space, i cant help thinking we should have gone with a pet gerbil or something that could live in the cubby box... Whistle
