Gas rams
Need some help and info. I'm making a cage to go in the rear of my double cab load area. I'm planning to make a section that will swing upward, think of a old range rover clasic glass section, made from 25x25 angle iron with mesh over. What I would like is this section to easily operated with rams to lift and hold it up.

What rams do I require?
What size?
Where from?
Any another thoughts?

Thanks in advance
Andy

Hi Andy

I have used these guys before for rams for a boardroom AV unit and university computer desks, their technical dept are really good helping you choose the correct Rams for your job Thumbs Up

There are plenty of companies that sell the struts and many offer a tailer made service where they can provide them to your specs, quick google brought up the likes of this company........ http://www.sgs-engineering.com/gas-struts

Hi Mate

try SGS engineering, they do them.

I would mark a point on your cage and a point on your lift up bit about 300mm apart and hold some string on each point while someone opens it, this will give you 300mm closed length and the length you need when its open.
Obviously there will be some messing about with dimensions and positions of your marks but you will be able to work out the length.
Second thing is weight , on the frame that opens , I would clamp a spring balance to where you think the strut will mount and see what force is needed to lift it.

Dead easy.....not Rolling Eyes

Thats how I have done it in the past Thumbs Up 2003 Td5 90

Great thanks. Have not yet looked at links, but are they costly? Are there any rules thoughts on how to mount them? One part higher than other, always do X etc. or do you get rams and design around the rams?

Hi Andy

We specified the ends, fixings, length stroke etc in conjunction with SGS technical guys, you just need to provide them with some information on sizes, weight if opening vertically, type of use etc.
If I remember correctly the total cost for the fixing plates ends and Rams came in around £70+VAT.

Cheers
