It's uniqueness that makes Defender ownership so interesting! You made it onto the 'unique steering wheel podium' pole position!  If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

OK, before the anti Kahn brigade come out, I must admit I like this steering wheel - but the price is staggering! I know it is a boat steering wheel but i think it looks good. Heaven knows what Boss kit they use!

ok, I have gone for the smallest wheel I can manage because it comes with me when I am not in the vehicle.
I tow a large box trailer every day for work and the ball makes reversing a doddle. I do not have arms like an ape and I find the setup very comfortable to use. I use one of the low profile quick release bosses. I bought a scarp steering wheel and cut the splined centre out and had it machined cylindrical and welded to a circular plate that bolts to the quick release. I had this set up so that the rim of the new steering wheel is in the same axial position as the original 'air bag' steering wheel. I find that the indicator and wiper stalks are perfectly easy to reach. Feel free to mock me but individuality is about being different. if ever I am feeling flush enough I would like it trimmed in leather if possible. No mocking at all very unique.
A quick search reveals that unless you are disabled and obtain it under the mobility scheme the 8 ball wheel spinner is in fact on the wrong side of legality. Apologies if you are registered and it is legit, with half the wheel missing you need the spinner as without it it would be difficult. Although it would have to be a Green 13 Ball for me...

This snap off would deter the oppertunist thief........but all they really need would be a 22mm spanner and a 38/48 spline s wheel so would not stop the scum with a little effort ......you need some way of covering the nut or glueing on the boss to the spline.but its better than nothing and looks great! |

nothing is going to stop the determined thief. we all understand that.
however we don't want to make it easy for them to take our vehicles. the determined thief can get around the alarm system but we don't leave our vehicles unlocked as a consequence. the idea is to buy time and the more obstacles you can put in the way the more time you buy and the more chance you have of the thief moving on to an easier target. glad you like the look of it. I have seen some complaints that this type of quick release develops 'play' with use. mine has done this and I put it down to the rubber cushions losing elasticity. I have remedied this by utilising 3 of the unused tapped holes in the detachable part. I have fitted grub screws in theses holes to take up the slack. |

Being a well fed sort of bloke I don't want any replacement wheel being to close my stomach. It is hard to judge from photo's how thick the adapter boss's are, would someone with the boss fitted tell me how much the wheel is brought closer to the driver. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to  us off.

Depends if you are using a snap off or not!The thinnest manufactured boss is the twisted boss at 1"(unless you are good at fabication like the one above)The thinnest snap offs are just over an inch!But there are some folk driving round with the steering wheel 5 inches closer to their innards!just put steering wheel or snap off into the search section!

I paid £12 for my donor wheel off ebay, that provided me with the splined part.
wherever you live you are not gong to be far away from a small engineering company that will be able to turn this rough casting into a turned cylinder and weld it into a circular plate. I drilled the 6 radial holes myself to get the angular alignment perfect. total spend on getting the boss made was about £25 I think. |

 Took mine out to Thirsk today only to find it is fitted with the 36 spline column which means a 2" boss. On getting home and with the aid of a rule found out that steering wheel will be to close for a comfortable driving position. So my not so funny bone is going to get more a banging. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to us off.
