200tdi vs Horsebox in the snow
Whilst following a horsebox being dragged by a Jeep at a fair pace this morning, me and the other half remarked how reckless they were doing such a speed on snowy/icy back lanes. We later caught them up as they had clearly seen sense and slowed for the conditions and then.....

http://youtu.be/NB91LJqSGQE

Everyone was fine including the horse but the Defender had a destroyed offside front wheel (which was left facing in the opposite direction to the other) and the wing etc which was nothing compared to what the whole side of the jeep looked like!

What happened next had us wondering what is the matter with people as a delivery driver started to try and drive onto the verge to get around the scene and started swearing and threatening the woman who'd been driving the Jeep. The police then rocked-up toting glocks on their thighs (we were between Highgrove and Gatcombe) and one went to find the lorry driver who was now hastily reversing away from the scene whilst the other dealt with the accident.

We can all make allowances for the conditions and drive to the best of our abilities but this goes to show that it means nothing if the muppet coming the other way isn't....

Phil.

What was going on with the defender driver? It looks like he's making no effort to turn and actually aiming for the jeep Shocked

Agreed - the defender is in the middle of the road but they are 100 metres from a clear road and seemingly didn't realise it was compacted snow/ice on this country lane. They did turn to avoid the jeep but braked, locked-up, understeered and bang.

I nearly fell over more than once just walking around the vehicles - it was as slippery as hell!

my wife, who tows her horse with our 110, would of sparked the defender driver clean out!

the vets bill will be big enough let alone trailer and jeep!

First question I'd ask at any accident - wonder if someone was on their phone or under the influence of drink/drugs? Did the jeep anticipate and brake at all - not that they had an alternative escape route? What speed was the Defender doing on that surface?

Hi,
They probably not realise how slippery was the road but probably more important the driver fixed the obstacle and not the way to escape.

I just hope there was not a horse in the horse box, jeep seemed to be speeding along too fast for the conditions

It also shows how important it is to leave a nice big space between vehicles at all times because the unexpected happens. Even more so when the weather is poor
Your responsible driving helped to keep the situation from becoming a lot worse.

I would say both parties were driving to fast but the defender was at fault not the jeep.

I had a phone call from the Jeep driver's insurer over a week ago who said they were looking to settle 50:50 with the Defender driver's insurance firm and asked if I had a view on this.

I said that I would be livid if they were my insurer and that the dash cam footage shows the Defender out of control on the wrong side of the road, hitting the Jeep which had nowhere left to go. The Dolly asked me to email her the footage and after I explained it was a large file, she said she'd speak to her colleague about how they could get a usb stick sent to me.

I have heard nothing since. No wonder everyone's insurance costs rise when the companies just want to take the easy option and settle rather than get the most appropriate outcome. After all - they cannot lose as they just stick their short-term losses onto the next year's premiums so that they are back in profit again.

This is precisely why I have a dash cam so that I can insist that my position is understood and fought for in a similar situation (should it ever happen). Phil

Rolling Eyes I hate insurance companies! I think the government should step in make then non profit as its against the law not to have. If it's a legal obligation I don't think anyone should be allowed to profit from it Evil or Very Mad

One of the points I re-iterated when training 4x4 Response drivers is "just because you have traction, doesn't mean you can slow down any quicker".

I'd say the oncoming Defender had too much speed on and couldn't overcome the laws of physics. They were turning the wheel to get away but had over come the grip and understeered into the Jeep with the wheels locked. The Jeep makes an instinctive attempt to get out the way but too late.

Just goes to show, drive defensively as if everyone coming the other way is an idiot, if even they are driving a Defender. As for the delivery driver.... Rolling Eyes

Glad no one inc the horse was hurt Thumbs Up New project and it's green: www.projectoverland.info
