Buy a good second hand set and re-powder coat or diy paint with with Rustoleum primer/paint.Powder coating is perfectly fine IF it's done well (another Landrover failing),fill the internals with cavity wax and don't forget to regularly clean them along with the rest of the car, moisture retaining dirt is the biggest cause of rust on any car. Well am getting older, have cream crackered knees (nothing to do with HM) and can manage R + T on 33" tyres and 2" lift. Technique plus gripper tape/perforated stainless tread plate. Many R + T sliders out there. They are good for supermarket car parks, mishaps with concrete bollards and black ice. Ensure you get hot dipped galvanised ones so when powder coating is damaged they will not rust. We have Safari Equip ones fitted to our 3 Defenders and can supply them. Not the cheapest in the market place but we have abused them over many years and they are good Brendan |

No, but you are welcome to bring that doctor's gear with you and try to find one speckle of rust on the truck, and if you succeed, I'll buy you a beer. Seriously, I see many Defenders here with side bars, and the black ones often start rusting, but the original SVX version which is gloss grey from the outside, just seems a different quality. Can't talk about other SVX owners experience with that, because I don't see any other SVX around here. By the way, my side steps were Dinitrolled from the inside together with the rest of the truck. Morning Eric I thought you were somewhat 'protective' over the fitting of SVX parts to non SVX Defenders? New leaf perhaps or just certain items?
As with everything SVX the price will be naturally hugely inflated anyway but superior quality. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

Mal, are you laughing because I say that there is not a sign of rust on mine?
You too are welcome to come and take a look yourself with or without such a doctor's camera. Will happily serve you a good Belgian Stella thereafter. Now, let's not get started about our beer preferences please. As to the SVX side steps, I don't think too many people are familiar with those, but there is a distinct difference in finishing between the original Land Rover black versions which I see all over, and the grey SVX version which Land Rover put on in 2008. Can't say more really. Eric You never actually own a Defender. Hi Eric,
I am not laughing about any rust as I am probably as fastidious about rust on mine as you are rust on yours. I was laughing at the irony of you stating that SVX bits really only belong only on SVXs with one post and advocating the purchase of SVX bits with another. SVX bits are of a higher quality but they do come at a huge premium to prevent Joe Public from buying them. I wonder how much a genuine set iof SVX sidesteps must cost from the dealers? I'd wager they will be eye-wateringly expensive and as a result not practical due to their lack of justifiable affordability, especially when for the same price you could probably/possibly have a set of 316 grade stainless steel ones made from scratch. No offence just an ironical connection. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

^^ The SVX sidesteps, no problem at all. Everybody deserves to have rust free sidesteps.
The SVX gear and transfer knobs, as well as the SVX cubby box, I think those really belong solely in an SVX, not a matter of quality, but a matter of identity. And a standard gearknob as well as a standard cubby box won't rust anyway. And then especially I do not wish anybody those terribly ice cold hands which some say you get with SVX gearknobs in the winter. Take my word for it, don't buy them, your hands may get frost bitten http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic34135....cold+hands

Slightly......
Eric, I've already got a set! No complaints from me about cold hands. Cold hand complaints?...... reminds me I must buy some 'Vagisil'.....apparently it gets rid of irritating 'cnuts'.....Those that do have them and gum bump about them feeling cold need to wipe their minges and man up or buy some gloves...... Click image to enlarge Sidesteps/sliders hot dipped and galvanised. No rust there either. Only been fitted a week so would have thought so too. ^^ Very very nice
But I know that you are basically of the same opinion as myself when it comes to those gear knobs. You never actually own a Defender. That quote was with reference from a dealer at £1200 for a matching pair!
I didn't buy them from a dealer and paid a fraction second hand. From a purchase price perspective that will place me firmly in the peasant camp in Defender terms.
