TD5 or 50th Annivesary speedo question
Can someone please confirm what other Defenders share the 50th speedo? I need to know where the speedo needle gets its signal from as mine isnt working.

Thanks!

The 50th Speedo is not the same as the TD5, it is unique to the 50th

OK great, it's unique then, thanks for clarifying. Before I take it out and send it away, I want to be sure that the problem is not to do with the electrical feed or sensor pick up that moves the needle. When I switch the ignition on, the needle twitches, so it's getting an ititial feed and i'm thinking the actual guage may therefore be OK and that's it's more to do with a pick up sensor. I think I heard somewhere that they have a sensor near the rear wheel????

Thanks again!

I think the speedo sensor is the same as a Td5 though, YBE100530.

The Td5 one is a development of the 50th/NAS one.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

So is the sensor located near the gearbox or near a rear wheel? Could a blown fuse cause a failure like this and does anyone have a fuse layout or wiring diagram?
Thanks!

It's on the side of the transfer box behind the handbrake drum.

I have got a wiring diagram but not on my phone Sad  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Don't think its fused on its own, 3 wires straight from transducer to speedo harness plug My 109 thread

Fuse 18, but this would have also taken out the brake lights, reverse light and front wiper.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

That's fab guys. So, without further investigating as its too bloody cold, when I bought the car and test drove it, the speedo worked but when I picked it up, the front wiper didn't work and neither did the speedo. The fuse for the wiper has blown, I know that as I've already checked but not replaced it yet. I'd be very happy if this has also caused the speedo to stop working and wondered if they were connected in some way the other night. Thumbs Up

If that is the case you don't have brake lights or reverse lights either, so change the fuse before you go out on the road Wink  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Cheers Martin, I hadn't realised that but thankfully not driven it since I picked it up.

Update!
So, my speedo failure was indeed down to a blown fuse! Thumbs Up So, if anyone else has a failed speedo on a 50th, check if your wipers have also failed and if they have, it's the blue 15 amp fuse that's gone. Thanks forum Mr. Green

Check the wiper boxes and see if they need un seizing because if the motor is labouring that sometimes blows the fuse.
