Its not unusual in Kent for them to be blocked unless you have permission to use.

Lots of them are now not much more than fancy driveways to houses or they go into private land where the land owner blocks it to stop gypsies and flytippers setting up camp.

Plus if its blocked the council doesn't have to keep it maintained so they can spend more money on not fixing our roads.

Its not right, but I can see understand why they do it.

Hopefully the owner got away with only light damage but even so

Some byways are indeed gated and require a permit to drive them in Kent.

Bredhurst wood byway was subject to this about 8 years ago after the Parish council tried to get it closed permanently and this was seen as a reasonable compromise.

The byway was cleared at this time by the local council a waste disposal company and the Royal Engineers under the guidance of the Bredhurst woods action group they removed 600 tonnes of rubbish that had been fly tipped in the woods !

I used to work in Bredhust until recently and at the weekends large groups of off road motorbikes would roar through the village at speed going from one byway to the next,very often these bikes were not road legal and not displaying number plates etc. they were able to get through the gates as the centre is lowered to allow access to horses, this is the sort of behaviour that gets all off roaders a bad name.

If you live in Kent it is worth getting a permit as this covers more than one byway in the North Downs area. 2005 Td5 90 XS
