Drawing the silhouette of the future
Quote:
Land Rover has gone back to the place where it all began to start a year-long celebration of the iconic Defender. A unique 1km sand drawing at Red Wharf Bay in Anglesey, UK, marks the launch of three exclusive limited edition models and the beginning of an exciting new chapter in the Defender story.

And the picture is this.

Now, the sand drawing is paying homage to Maurice Wilks who took a walk on Red Wharf Bay beach with his brother Spencer and drew his idea in the sand: a Rover that could work on the land. He drew the future. He drew the first draft of what would become the Land-Rover.

If Land Rover is similarly showing us the future they have given us a very clear indication here. The sand drawing is not a Series 1, a modern Defender or anything in between. It is a DC100.

From this it seems we will get a restyled DC100 to replace our cars.

Shame.

It's no different to every new car release. Near all do not like the newer version and then when launched its a huge success.

The same the the latest RR, Evoque etc

I'm certain it will be a better can in every possible way to the current offering but won't have the heritage and following of the tradition.

IF a new defender does come then all it will mean is more people saying to us "oh you got the proper one"

I disagree. I think it's just a current 90.

Just a little 'simplified/stylised' Cheers, David

Yes, I don't think that the drawing will bear any particular resemblance to the "new" Defender.

No the bonnet is all wrong, it even has the hump of the tdci models. also it has the completely plumb-dead-straight rear end of a current defender. The DC100 is more lumpy.

I think you're all reading a bit much into this Whistle Cheers, David

Time will tell, fingers and toes crossed the new one or what ever they plan to replace or exchange it with will be something good.

Hopefully that outline is what they've 'reduced' the defender down to. And that could then be a good starting point for any future defender models.

Hopefully these celebration editions have, if nothing else, shown that Land Rover at least still cares about the defender & it's roots Cheers, David

I wouldn't read too much into the shape, it was after all a stylised image created by an artist. Presumably therefore it is intended to evoke Defendery thoughts rather than to be a detailed representation of anything in particular.

I think it was a rather good stunt, myself! I like it. Thumbs Up

The rake of the screen is very reminiscent of the DC100.

The more I look at the DC100 the more I like it. Given the crash/pedestrian protection rules, I'm not sure how much different they can make it.

Roll on the replacement...

Cheers
