Key cutting
I've not long bought some new keys for my 90 after losing a set in the house which I cannot find for the life of me. Rolling Eyes
Anyway, they will be blanks so will need cutting.
Where have others got theirs done?
For the cost of what they are I don't want to have them ruined that's for sure.
Timpson seems to be popular on the net but seem to have an iffy review where I live.
Dealer wants £18 each for key cutting and and as I didn't get the keys from them I'm not sure they will or if it'd cost even more than that.
As I've only got one key left I'm not prepared to post it or obviously I'd have no key left. Shocked

£18.00 for single key cutting the dealer must be having a laugh! £5.00 is the average price and unless the key cutter has blanks that match your vehicle which most don’t, they will have no problems cutting your own supplied blanks. As key cutters use an automatic machine it is rare that one would ruin the cutting process.

Personally I would say that Timpsons use the same machine and process that any other locksmith key cutter uses. And lets face it the dealer would probably just take it to Timpsons anyway to have it cut

True words, the costs were what I was trying yo avoid with my local dealer.
It would be £160 for a new fob, programming and ignition key at my local.

I've already got 2x genuine key blanks, new fuel cap and 2x keys and fob and programmed. (Keys and cap thanks to Dan & programming and fob Gary @ Alive)
All this for £130 so far ex cutting but I've got a lot more items for my money!

I would take key to main dealer for cutting, that way if it goes wrong they can sort it. If you go anywhere else and they do it wrong, there is no way they would cover those high costs. After what you've spent I can't see the point in messing about for a tenner.

I've found sometimes that little local shops can do a great job as they've got more to lose so are less likely to make a mistake. There is a good little shop in Thornbury, just north of Bristol that I would recommend if that isn't too far or you end up passing that way? 2007 (57) Defender 90 (Sold)
Looking for another to replace it.

The road less travelled.... is a muddy one!

Andy - Yes, that's something I'm wondering, can they do it in house though? I guess that's something I can only ask.

They just arrived in blank form:

Of course I wouldn't put up a photo if they were actually cut but this is the newest style keys.
I'm not a fan of the all in one keys, yes they do work but silly as it sounds I don't like the look or design of them.
I'd rather stick to the factory fob and decided to opt for the 14style keys.

most key cutting mistakes are because the owners old key is too worn to get the proper profile from for new key

Mines only done 40k so hopefully that won't be an issue. Thumbs Up
I'll enquire at my local dealers, see what they say and the cost and go from there.
Another thing I'll bear in mind is that I'd need it done there and then not days later, so I'll have to see.

The dealer is highly unlikely to have key cutting equipment on site, they will sub it out, so the chance of having it done straight away is pretty slim!  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

The dealer will probably go to Timpson's or the like just like a dealer I got a Range Rover from some years ago, I saw the apprentice in the shop getting it done, they tried to charge £25.00, Shocked offered them £2.50 and the took the money Thumbs Up Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place,
so it doesn't take much to Censored us off.

Martin - That's my thoughts too.

I'll just try Timpsons I think, trouble is that in the middle of the town and A. I hate it and B. It's a sod to park.

Yes. I expect they are all similar. A lot cheaper anyway than a dealer Wink
