England 2003 Defender 90 Td5 PU Aintree Green
Side window demisters.
Hi all looking at getting side window demisters for my 90, my question is which is better? from what i can see theres 2 main types MUD do a kit whick puts a vent at each endplate of the dashboard and defenderdemisters simply screw on the top of the dash, has anyone had experience of either?

any help appreciated Ed

I made my own for about £10/£15 not that hard to do if your ok with a spanner and screw driver

I made my own which work in a very similar way to the MUD ones.
I drilled into the top of the lower-dash and fitted bulkhead connectors for corrugated conduit, I then ran the conduit to the sides and drilled a suitable hole on the end panels. With a smooth finisher the job is a good'un and totally invisible apart from the outlets.

Unless you want to take the top of the dash off (I already had it apart) then the MUD ones are as good as any, more discreet than the other ones but probably no more effective and certainly dearer. ONE LIFE, GET IT!

I use defender demisters because i was too lazy to fit an integrated kit. They work fine once the air is hot.

Side Screen Demisting was fitted to the 'winterised' Military Defenders procured during 1991

I fitted these Military parts to my 110 around 1995, and it's well worth having Thumbs Up

The dealer looked-up the prices and wrote them against the part numbers - this was around 1995 IIRC.

The diagram doesn't make it very clear but, item #1 - Part No. RRC7316, is the adaptor that goes onto the new dash end pieces to enable the convoluted hoses to connect to them, you require 2 of this part (one for each side).

I think that you are also supposed to use 2 x RRC7316 to connect the side-screen convoluted hoses to the new dash closing panel, item #4 - RRC7320

I didn't buy the new dash closing panel or the adaptors for it, I used my existing dash closing panel and used a holesaw to cut two holes of the right diameter into it either side of the hole where the hose for the L/H windscreen demister outlet is connected (roughly where shown in the diagram) so that the new side-screen convoluted hoses are routed behind the bulge in the dash trim. I de-burred the edges of the new holes and with a pair of pliers I 'kinked' the hole so that the convoluted hoses screwed in to the panel. I then put sealer around the joint.

I'm not sure if any of these parts are still available from Land Rover - but, if they are, I expect that they're now silly-money.

I made my own as well, cost me nowt. used some ribbed cable trunking and a short angled peice of the next size up

drill a hole in the neck piece, and slide the conduit right down and feed the other end round to the side hole.

then pull thro the new hole, slip the larger bit over the smaller bit, but cut it off at an angle at the back.

then pull back from the otherside , and the 'cut off' piece sets the angle to blow backwards over the window, Rotate to suit, so it blows up and back.

Simples! works a treat.

My experience was that the Mudstuff ones were a bu99er to fit (I watched IRB Ian doing it on my TD5). The conduit supplied doesn't really fit over the throated plastic moulding properly.

When it was finally fettled, the strength of the blower output isn't really enough to make much of a difference to the side windows. You get a small clear patch, maybe enough to get an area to see the mirror a bit better, but no more. 2003 Td5 110 Hardtop
Now a 2013 110 USW too.

They would do the job, even better with some mesh over the end. Just need to T into the ducting to get the feed, 1999 Defender TD5 110

I didn't t in, I drilled holes next to the ducting into the airbox and pushed the convoluted tubing into it so you get a better flow of air to the side windows and don't interupt the flow to the windscreen.

That's how the Military demisters are fitted.
