When I serviced mine I was pleasantly surprised at the cost of the parts, I was expecting them (esp the cup and shaft) to be much more expensive.

Did you have any trouble preventing the gearbox output shaft from rotating whilst undoing/doing up the rather tight nut that retains the cup to the output shaft? I ended up buying the special tool for this, whcih though pricey, compares favourably with the cost of the time needed to fabricate an equivalent and does make the job very sinple.

I agree with you that the opposed nipples (!) with a plugged hole in the case is the way to go. As I have a spare gearbox I might have a play about with it and design a mod.

I am glad i could help out on this, and you have found this post helpful!

To remove the large nut, i am fortunate enough to have a 3/4 air gun which will wizz off anything you put it on!

Dont forget a "dab of Loctite" on the threads!

I did not know the torque of the nut so i done it up to RED FACE TIGHT! Laughing (Trust me its not coming off!)

Having talked to the owner of the 90 today, he says it feels like a different car, much smother through the gears and no clunk when taking up drive, he was very happy.

So even though there was very little wear in the shaft, replacing and greasing really does make all the difference Thumbs Up 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

Ian, is this an official bulletin from LR?
I'm on my second intermediate shaft, 2010 90, the last one went for 9000km Evil or Very Mad
Anyway, I just sent the dealer the reference number from your picture, will wait and see...

Just had my output shaft replaced on a MY2010 90XS with only 17500 miles on the clock, exactly the same with no lubrication on the splines. Shaft failed whilst driving on the M40 near Beaconsfield, suddenly lost all drive without warning even though engine was running and it was in gear, had to be recovered to JLR dealer. Upon removal of the transfer box dealer sent me a video showing the output shaft rusty and bone dry.

Vehicle has been repaired and JLR have offered a goodwill payment of 50% towards the cost as the vehicle is out of warranty. I would have thought that something like this would warrant a recall, surely it is a safety issue?

Anyway be warned if you have a 2010/2011 plate then this shaft WILL fail and is likely to leave you stranded without warning.

That's the same parts list that the dealer has just given me on my invoice so it must be an official JLR bulletin.

I don't think anything has changed, except that possibly they're lubricated better on assembly.

I have often wondered why vehicles built circa 2010 seem to be more susceptible to this failure than others.

Most informative, thank you.

I plan to remove the transfer box next year to carry out the above work. I had a new shaft fitted, last year under warranty.
I wonder if you could fit a C.V. boot (cut to suit )
Around the splined shaft coupling to help keep the grease in and the dust and water out.
Has anyone tried this, I understand if you fitted this with, tie straps at 180 degree off sets the shaft would remain balanced Excuse the spelling I`am better with spanners and wires.

The ashcroft kit looks promising. Next time I do one I'll try and get one to trial out. Greasing will prolong the life a little but it's certainly not going to cure the problem.
