It already has (or should have) an effective seal. A gaiter is unlikely to do much that the seal doesn't already do.

be honest I think the gaiter would be a better seal , the seal that's in there cant be that good other wise you wouldn't see the brown wear dust round inside the casing

Does anyone know the diameter of the gearbox out put coupling. And the none splined section of the shaft. To which you could mount the gaiter on.
I plan to have a trawl thru the swag bin at work, I`am thinking a universal type C.V., steering rack or even a propshaft sliding joint gaiter would do the trick. Excuse the spelling I`am better with spanners and wires. |

 Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge IMHO I can't see a gaiter doing much, as once you lube the shaft and re asemble there is a nice little black plastic collar that seals it up. As long as it's greased it will be fine! 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |

Well mines recently been changed out under warranty and I'm surprised at the difference it has made.
I appear to have adapted my driving style as it got worn and made gentler and gentler gear changes to minimise the clunking. The guy who collected it for servicing did not show it the same mechanical sympathy  and found the fault straight away.
I think there's a lesson there for me! |

Had my first replacement fitted under warranty at 26k miles.
Just had clutch replaced at 55k and extention shaft was bone dry with pile of rust collected in casing. Hadn't failed but was in a sorry state. |

This is pretty shocking really. It's the first time I've read this thread and the dry shafts are just utterly ridiculous. I Presume some incompetent at LR thought as it's not a sliding spline it doesn't need lubrication....however a bit of grease will work wonders for preventing rust, which causes wear, which makes it loose which makes it wear even faster.
Inexcusable failures these "bodge" shafts between the gearbox and transfer box, they should last forever as not sliding or moving much if the splines are tight. It's *rap like this that makes me think *od it I'll go and buy a Hilux.... Jonno |

Took mine in for the clutch and the indie also pulled everything else out for an inspection.
Truck on 64,000km, lots of dust in the gearbox but the shaft itself is still in good nick and does not need to be replaced. Clutch, however, is in a bad state - the small springs have pretty much collapsed. It's going to be an expensive month

I've just had my clutch replaced at 16k miles, the springs were at least that bad.
Whilst it was out I also had the shaft replaced, I think some wires got crossed somewhere because I asked them to have a look at it and see how much wear there was, I don't think it was *too* bad (although it does rattle in your hands) but I was away and they couldn't get hold of me so put the Ashcroft one in. Drive is so much better than it was before, it's lovely. Cost was a bit over £1200 for parts and labour, roughly 50/50 but I haven't got the ticket in front of me. |
