2008 Defender 130 Puma 2.4 HCPU Chawton White
Engine replacement
Hi mates. Just thinking ahead and wondering if anybody has experience with these engines http://www.nav-international.com.br/site.aspx/Vehicular
They look quite appealing to me, specially the 4.3H being mechanical (the only thing is its almost twice as heavy as the puma engine) but they have options that weigh the same.
Transmission-wise can it be possible?
Cheers

Earlier this year I saw a 90 getting fitted with a Cummins 6BT Shocked the plan was for the truck engine and gearbox to be installed as one and mated at the transfer box. The engine is found in quite a lot of 7.5t truck over here. Lots of tuning bits in the US. There are a few 6bt defenders on YouTube. Here is a photo of Aaron's 90( taken from his posts)

Wow that Cummins looks great in there. I was thinking of the International engines as they have a good name in reliability and performance and I can get them at a great bargain from their Brazilian plant. What about the engine weight? That Cummins must be pretty heavy compared to the Puma as I believe the Puma weighs around 200 kg dry. I suppose the extra weight might affect off road performance? I like the International 4.3H as it does not have an ECU and has plenty of power, is a 4 cyl BUT weighs around 450kg. Im just thinking ahead as I want to keep my Defender until I die and Im not really an enthusiast of the Puma engine for when mine needs replacement (I hope for many years from now). Just wondering how would ine adapt transmission etc. Ive been saving some pennies every montg since I bought my Defender for when that day comes.
Cheers

Here is Aaron's build thread = http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f7/aarons-90...47956.html

I think some toyota's had a 4BT cummins(may be wrong), here is a Australian mod defender with the 4bt cummins (even though it says Isuzu)= http://www.milweb.net/webvert/73010

Hope you get some other ideas thrown your way Thumbs Up Range Rover p38 4.6 99 lpg(gone Sad )

That Cummins 4BT got my attention, taking in mind the job has already been done! I like its mechanical (no ECU) and I can also get Cummins here (a little more expensive than International). I believed the 3.9 was an Isuzu engine, until today.
Which one would you go for Stu?

Noticed on tthe thread they said tje strongest gearbox fitted on a Defender was the LT. I thought it was the six speed on the Puma, considering it is used on many other vehicles with lots more power. How much can the 6 speed take?

500 nm sounds pretty good to me. 450nm would make me more than happy! If the 360nm (according to LR) in the Puma does the job, 450nm should be impressive!

If I could have a 6bt in my 110 I would, but that is only a pipe dream for me Big Cry . But it is not impossible and fitting it into a 90 shows that brilliantly. I will have to be happy(which I am Thumbs Up ) with my 5 cylinders. Range Rover p38 4.6 99 lpg(gone Sad )

Steve with such mods, will the engine see its lifespan considerably reduced ?
To source a Puma here is overpriced (in my opinion 12k usd is an abuse), so I was thinking for when my Puma eventually dies I would replace it with an engine with a little more displacement so it would be under stressed and last longer.

Stue a 6bt would be living a dream, I was also considering the 4bt (taking in mind engine weight) as it has already been done many times (so I was told in the thread). Cummins still manufactures them for non highway applications so getting parts for a rebuild on a road engine should be easy. Also those International from the link I posted will do pretty good. Probably they would be expensive to take to the UE, just as it is expensive to bring the Puma here.
