Depends what you mean by rubber, if the rubber contains Urethane then it will not stick to stainless steel, nor will any rubber that during its curing process oil has been used or oils as a release agent to take it from the mould or roller, as the rubber molecules will absorb the oil, you may find initially that the rubber will stick but over a short time the oil will bleed and destroy the bond. You would have more success if the rubber is synthetic.
Also be careful if using solvent-based glue as some solvents will over a short time melt the rubber destroying the bond. In any case you will need to key the surface of the stainless steel particularly if it is highly polished. Ideally you would need a cyanoacrylate adhesive but that may be impractical. If the rubber you intend to stick will have little load i.e. not a strip of rubber that you intend to stick on say a stainless steel side bar or step then a common tube or tub of non-solvent based Evo Stick will suffice and should give a reasonably strong long lasting bond. If the rubber is to be used in a load area you will need an adhesive such as Master Bond which you should be able to source from any good quality builders merchants. |
