Secure boxes to rack?

Hi - just curious, how do you secure things like wolf boxes to racks, other than with a ties or ratchet straps? Is there a more secure way?

I'm planning a new roof rack in the next few weeks, and with a trip to Eastern Europe coming up I'll be taking a lot of kit with me that will fit in boxes that I plan to put up on the rack, but I'd like it to remain there!

Understand that if someone wants something bad enough they'll get it - just want the security to be a bit better than a tie strap.

Is there anyone who makes boxes that attach to a rack from inside, same concept as safes which are secured to the floor through the bottom?

On long (overland) trips I have a metal ex army box bolted (from inside) to the roof rack. I also made a subframe from alloy angle, two alloy army boxes fit exactly in it. The frame is bolted to the roof rack, and I can secure the boxes to the subframe with a metal strap and pad lock.

I have not come across a good secure system for fixing different boxes to a roof rack yet.

If your rack is one with Tee slots in the rails you could slide bolts or uni strut nuts down the channels then you could drill a couple of holes in the bottom of your wolf boxes and bolt them onto the racks.

OK you still have the problem that the lids can be opened and contents removed. If you were using something's like Alu boxes you could put a small padlock through the latches

Super - thanks for the info guys.

I don't plan on leaving the 110 out of sight for very long, usually when we're there we either park inside our courtyard or in a lorry park that has a guard... still, anything can go missing.

I dont use boxes, but...

I have 2 waterproof bags secured using rachets to U bolts in the roofrack.

The system served well to me for almost 7 years. Easy to install, save weigth in the upper part (stability) and easy to storage when not in use.

Good weight saving idea, thanks for sharing that.

I do often wonder about overloading the rack; there is only so much you can put up there.

2013 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 XS DCPU Keswick Green

On a different vehicle I used the Engel 40 Litre Fridge Transit Base

and then the corresponding feet fitted to a large metal transit case - worked very well for large bulky items that weren't too heavy.

I also think the way motorcycle panniers/top boxes fit could be a way forward. Had an excellent set of Givi Monokey boxes that just clipped in and locked & just needed a key & press a release button to remove. Boxes were slightly streamlined and fully waterproof.
