Saw it done the other day on Top Gear.
Tried it on my trailer wheel that I managed to run off the rim when flat. I used some carb cleaner inside the tire and lit it with a match. It popped the one bead into place quite nicely but no matter how I tried I couldn't get the opposite beading on. Is there any special trick or should I try some other type of quicker igniting gas? Anyone who has got it to work - love to hear the details. I was also wondering if I could use my tire levers on an alloy rim without damage if I should take only a spare tyre on our next trip as opposed to bying a 6'th rim. |

Try a big ratchet strap around the diameter of the tyre in the middle of the tread - crank it really tight and it will force the beads outwards towards the egdes of the rims. Should be enough of a seal for a compressor to work to pop the beads on. Undo the ratchet strap as soon as the beads are on otherwise the strap will be very hard to undo. I use the ratched strap trick too. I didn't need that for my BFG MT235/85 but needed it for the Goodyear G90's.
and for the Goodyear MTR on my G4. I don't like to use soap as I have the idea that the tyres get off the bead to easily if you have used soap to mount them. I use plain water. Another point I like inner-tubes. I have driven about 100000 Miles with my Camel always with inner tubes. I think you can deflate a tyre more if you have fitted innertubes. If you push a tyre from the bead with an inner tube you have a big chanche that no damage is done. With a tubeless tyre you loose all the air. With my Camel I only had one flat tyre during offroading but that was a clean cut through the side wall so that didn't make a difference. With my tubeless tyres on my G4 I had already 6 times a slow leaking tyre because off sand between the rim and tyre. With the steel rims and my alloy rims I use a hi-jack and the LR's weight to get the tyre from the bead. If you just have sand or dirt between the rim and tyre just push one side off the bead clean it and remount it by a compressor and then do the other side. This way your tyre will be approx at the same place at the rim and your balancing won't be completely out. Some loose dry sand inside the tyre doesn't hurt the balance off the tyre.
