To be honest he didn't say much about the Defender he was on about the iconic Lr and Jag design What I really wanted to say was - so how are you going to keep your iconic design but I didnt...! Embarassed

Why does the rear crossmember keep popping up in these photos when the proposed vehicle will not have a separate chassis as in the existing vehicle? What's the rear crossmember attached to? 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

why on earth would the new defender have the rear crossmember like that .......the large hole on the right was from the series 1 ....its nonsense!

From that link Petrovich supplies (AutoExpress) the new one is still way off! Going to see a Suzuki Jimny tomorrow, and will seriously consider the new Jimny when it gets here. I've waited long enough, I think. I could take 2018, but given JLR have lied in the past about a release date, then I don't see much point. I could wait...and then find out it's £35,000+ or that it's butt ugly. I think I've had enough.

i think that you can rest assured that if it comes it will be £35K plus. Got to keep those profit margins up

No, that was on the nearside. That is the trailer socket recess on coil sprung models.

I agree that the picture is just a photoshopped fantasy though.

Yes. Can someone explain to me that if Suzuki can sell a new Jimny for just £13,000 and still make a decent profit, why can't Land Rover? I understand that the new Defender and the new Jimny are not entirely comparable, but if Land Rover made a small 4x4 to rival the Jimny, we all know it would be £25,000+!

Why are some members so shocked about the new Defender costing £35,000 plus. Lets face it, many of us bought Defenders nearing the end of their production run, the 90 XS SW costing just over £30k and the 110 a little bit more. They were not exactly state of the art technology or design, their product quality was as low as a rattlesnakes bum and creature comfort was nigh on non existant - and still we shelled out over 30 grand. Land Rover has manoeuvred itself over the years into a highly desirable premium brand, so get real and and get to grips with the fact its price tag is going to be north of 35k. Defender 90XS SW

Well, I completely disagree. The outgoing Defender was costly to produce because of the way it was 'designed'. The new one (which I suspect will largely be assembled by automated machines) should be cheaper to produce - in that sense. JLR have become a 'premium' brand, yes, and I'm not at all sure that's a great idea, actually. But the new Defender has to be competitive. If Jeep and Ford's Defender rivals are much cheaper (if) then JLR would have made a mistake in pricing it so high...and £35,000 is high, in my opinion, for a small 4x4. So I repeat my question: if Suzuki can make a small 4x4 AND MAKE A PROFIT for just £13,000, why couldn't Land Rover? It would suggest they are doing something wrong.

By the way, the Mitsubishi Shogun starts at £32,000 - and you can get a discount on that at dealers. I think it's fair to compare the Defender to the Shogun, rather than the Jimny. So a Defender priced at £30,000 base would be a clever move. Even Ineos (building a niche 4x4) are aiming for £35,000 so I really do expect JLR to price the Defender lower. I have a small manufacturing business, and I know how tempting it is to go up-market for high profit returns. But lower prices (and profits) really do push the product out at greater numbers, which tends to increase profits over time. buyanewcaronline.co.uk have the Shogun from just £26,000!

The outgoing Defender was conceived as a utility 4x4 even if the market changed towards the end. The new one will not be, it will be a premium "lifestyle" product aimed at an affluent sector and will cost a packet.

I wish I knew what JLR were thinking.

Building Series Ones at £60,000+ and RR Classics at £120,000+.

I cannot see any evidence that they are bothered about the utility end of the market.

They currently seem to be abandoning their history, whilst continually using it for marketing purposes.

If they don't want to go back to it, then forget it and just be a manufacturer of luxury cars and SUVs.
