Split charger and power inverter
Hi,

I am looking at installing a double battery system + split charger + power inverter. I see there are a lot of posts on this topic, and hopefully will not repeat the existing (e.g., which between ACR / VSR; Blue Sea vs IBS; etc). My plan is to have a starting battery and run anything else on the Aux (additional lights; fridge when needed; power inverter for kettle, computer, chargers, etc).

A camping van specialist has actually recommended I go for a different system (obviously, a pricy one Rolling Eyes ) - and use either a Mastervolt Mass Combi or a Victron unit to serve my needs. That would be combined to my existing battery + additional gel unit (something like GBP 900 in itself ...).

Has anyone looked at a similar set-up in a Defender? It looks like a complete overkill to me (especially since I hear so many good things about simpler systems) but I'd like to get another opinion before dismissing it ...

thanks!
Marc

Sounds like a serious set up. Shocked

Don't want to come over all preachy but do you really need such a set up?

Decent Fridge is money well invested, we use our Engel for all manner of stuff and it works well for us on a basic leisure battery (£70 job) will run for about 3-4 days on this without running the car.

I use a heavy duty relay and have a homemade split charge.

We have a cheapo Halfords (Ring Can) that is a basic inverted but is used for charging laptops etc.

Kettles require power! So we boil our water on a stove (Jetboil)

So I guess the split charge becomes less complex if you look at the things you're running.

As you so justifiably stated there are a myriad of threads on here with very good feedback and installation instructions with pictures on several renowned and well-tested makes.
Why are so even considering splurging more cash than necessary on an 'overkill' system (your opinion, not mine) on a system recommended by one when there is a lot of information readily available already on numerous others?

£900 on a gel unit alone? Shocked ......Was he wearing a mask and carrying a musket or big floppy shoes and a red nose?

Has anyone used the CTEK D250S Dual Battery Charger? It seems like an elegant solution to me, but I'm not an electrical expert in by any stretch of the imagination! 2.2 Tdci 110 XS CSW Corris Grey

Not a mention of that particular one but several mentioned here of the same brand.....

If I recall correctly our sister Disco site had some form of group buy/discount offered a while ago on CTEKs and an adaptor was available through Martin to charge through your tow socket?

I have my dual battery system running for over 5 years now, consisting of a Cyrix VSR (€50) and a Optima Yellowtop leisure battery (€180). Add some cable, connectors and other small hardware. I am very happy with this setup, and it is not very expensive.
I run a Waeco 40l compressor fridge on the Yellowtop, as wel as additional lights and phone chargers and the like. I also have a solar panel permanent on the roofrack for topping up the leisure battery while camping. Cheers, Vincent

^^^ Indeed, it is best to avoid using an inverter: most laptops and mobile chargers work on 12V (or use a dc-dc converter).
And a fireplace is much more fun than an electric kettle Whistle
