terrible clatter then no power SOLVED
Hi, i have no issues when driving my 2007 110 around town but when i went on a longer dual carriagway journey yesterday the following symptoms occurred.
under light throttle at 78mph a rattle started to occur that i initially thought was big ends.

At this point i thought the rattle was the turbo impeller on the housing and it had seized.
After leaving the car for 15 minutes, i started it to come home and it was absolutely fine!
i kept the speed to 60mph and 2000rpm on the way home and the symtoms did not reoccur. the temp gauge was normal at all times

Under WOT there is just the induction roar but when i reduce throttle input to maintain speed there is the rattle and under no throttle the rattle disappears. I know how diesels should sound and this is not a normal rattle.
when i got home i took it round to the local garage and he only read a MAF fault code.
After first thinking big ends then turbo and then high pressure fuel pump i now think it might be fuel rail pressure incorrect due to something???
the car has done 125k miles and was serviced, oil and filters about 2 weeks ago. it was a warm but not hot day, this was England after all.
Any advice would be really gratefully received as i love the car.
Thank you, Nathan

Sounds like diesel knock, could be a faulty fuel metering valve/rail pressure sensor. Best thing to do is get the fault codes read first, clutching at straws until you do that really Thumbs Up

Along with that I would get the injectors tested or at least get the return flow from the injectors measured, you never know it might save a bent con rod. Excuse the spelling I`am better with spanners and wires.

thanks for the replies, from further reading i think the clattering noise on a light throttle could definately detonation from over fuelling. Thats why when i floor the throttle the noise disappears ( correct fuel /air ratio) and on a completely closed throttle the noise disappears. just need to find the reason. im thinking the metering valve on the injector pump??? or the MAF or the MAP. Any other ideas guys. thankyou

there were no codes stored. the fuel rail pressure was between 3500 and 8000 psi when revved and the MAP was at 100 kPa. does this sound right?

fuel rail pressure on common rail should be a lot lot higher

are you sure that it was psi ?

does it black smoke when it plays up ?

yes i think so it was 3000 at tickover and rose to about 7500 at 2000rpm, that is about 500 bar.

hi, yes it maxed out at 1600 mPa on the fuel rail. the MAP seemed to go up as the turbo did and peaked at 240 kPa, 100 on tickover. no fault codes were found.

something still not right

1600mpa is 232,000 psi
160mpa is 23,000 psi (so about right )
160mpa is 1600 bar

how often does it do it?

im fairly sure its just a decimal place out as otherwise it would either blow the relief valve or not work at all. And its 1600 which is what the rail is supposed to run at. im stumped, i think it might be bad engine noise after all. fluids are fine, engine temp is fine, 91c and no vacuum in the fuel tank.

Have you removed the fuel relief valve to check it hasn't popped?
