Goodwinch TDS winch help - what's inside
Recently I have noticed that the release handle on my goodwinch TDS has started moving virtually all the way round rather than just half a turn, when running the rope out manually. It still works correctly apart from this, including the brake.

I have had the end cap off which is where you adjust the brake I believe, but what is inside the next bit if I take that off? Is it full of springs and things that will jump out at me? What will I find, is there something to tighten to stop the handle turning all the way round?

Has anyone seen any exploded pictures, the only one I can find on the goodwinch site shows the relevant bit of casing but it hides what is inside it.

Any help appreciated. Thanks. 2015 RRS Autobiography SDV6

Dave, it's not likely to be loose but warn in this instance. You can start stripping all of the right-hand side of the unit as it simply holds the brake mechanism together, plus, it is threaded by a shaft along the main winch housing to the motor. The real iffy part of any winch of this nature is on the left which holds the motor and therefore houses the electrical internals. This bit can be tough if you don't know what you're doing.

The bit on the right will be fine. You should be able to check the release handle under the housing to see if it's excessively worn. It should be obvious if it is.

EDIT: How old is the winch and how often have you used it?

Regards,

Dave, is the release handle solid in its casing, i.e. any vertical movement? - Andrew -

It's probably three years old and has been used, it certainly isn't an ornament. Will need to check up and down movement 2015 RRS Autobiography SDV6

Decided to strip it out and see what was happening.

First I took the brake cover off which allowed access into the next row of Allen screws, removing these allowed the whole gearbox assembly to be taken off but I still couldn't see the offending item so I started dragging the gear assemblies out.

The inner assemblies just pull out, after the first two are out then the outer fing came away allowing access to the inner assembly.

Once the inner assemblies are all out, turning the release lever allowed the outer gear ring to be withdrawn.

This needs to be slide out evenly as it is a snug fit. Once this was out it was easy to see how the release lever works, it is just a pin that is withdrawn against spring pressure.

As it turns out, all I needed to do was tighten the screw on top of the handle, but it was good to have it all apart and see that it has remained pretty watertight, even though it has been well and truly dunked on numerous occasions. 2015 RRS Autobiography SDV6

On mine the release handle is getting ready to do the same thing.

Thanks for taking the time to take pictures and post them! Thumbs Up
Interesting to know what's inside there.

and nothing springs out which is a bonus. If it is just the handle, just trying tightening the screw on top first. Whistle 2015 RRS Autobiography SDV6
