Why not have a few words with Andy at AJS Tyres? He is a site sponsor on here although he does not post on a regular basis.
So phone or email might be best.

Tell him exactly what you are after and the quality you require.

Sometimes it pays to go to small specialist and tell them exactly what your requirements are. OK range might not be as big as some of the larger companies, prices might not be the same as the large companies, however chances are that you will speak to someone with real product knowledge and a real interest in the company being successful rather then the stereotypical Saturday boy!

Weller Wheels are now made in Redditch and there are plans to make a land rover wheel in future.

Just don't ask how I know Wink

So keep an eye on their website.

To prevent that, the first thing I did when I got my new wheels was run a bead of silicone into that gap and let it set.
3 years on and still no sign of rust Thumbs Up

E'er, that's wot I said! Wink

It is a known issue (not just with Modulars) and the silicone trick really does work although it shouldn't be necessary in this day and age. ONE LIFE, GET IT!

Interestingly, neither this thread nor the one titled "Heavy Duty Steel Wheels (Wolf)" have attracted any comment from companies who might actually know their product lines and want to attract orders.

I can only conclude that their current order books are so full they don't want any more orders in the run up to Christmas.

As my marketing colleagues at work would say - "why go online promoting your business and sponsoring a forum if you cannot be bothered logging on and seeing a sales opportunity staring you in the face.

Or for those of limited commercial awareness - don't you want a £1000 in your till tomorrow for 5 minutes work?

I have a tip - DO NOT buy your modular wheels from JOHN CRADDOCK,

I bought a new set of modulars fitted with Cooper STT's and paid significantly more than any another supplier - I stupidly took comfort thinking that I was buying a better quality premium product from them - I thought John Craddock were reputable.

Within less than 9 months a significant amount of rust started to appear on the join between the rim and face of the rims. I emailed John Craddock with photographs and was ignored, I emailed them again and was ignored, I again emailed them and telephoned them and was curtly informed - "what did I expect for cheap steel rims" - they were not cheap though they were significantly more expensive than all of the other suppliers in the LRO magazine and also on the internet.

I think you have made your position clear and an interesting read. Perhaps now you realise why I am doing my homework before spending my own cash. As a company with a strong online presence I was looking to place an order with them - but the lack of technical specifications on their website had alarm bells ringing in my head - before I read your post.

Why does the simple task of buying a set of fairly basic steel wheels have to be so problematic?

Brendan,
In fairness to Andy and AJS I should say that we are already in dialogue via PM and they are being very helpful as usual. I just want to draw on other experiences, views and options before choosing which way to go.

Has anyone bought from http://www.4x4tyres.co.uk/235-85-16/235-85...-1850.html
before?

When I was looking for a set of new wheels and tyres for mine I tried the above as they are only a few miles away, two unanswered calls and two unanswered emails later I bought from Silverline.

Thanks so much for the comments so far. Looks like one supplier to pass by.
Grouse, Im not surprised you are so unhappy looking at the photos. Thanks for taking the trouble to post them.

I haven't bought from them but offering Wolf style steel wheel rims for £39.95 incl VAT had me wondering about what sort of 'quality' product that would be. Is it the same product that John Craddock are offering for £60 incl VAT? Anyone know?

Is that the only way the weights can be fitted? Do they not do black weights?

You can paint the weights once they're on, it's not difficult.

I spent many hours last weekend looking for heavy duty modulars and couldn't find any that were then recommended on any of the forums (by searching, I didn't post questions). Therefore, I've decided to save up a bit longer and get the alloys I wanted in the first place.

Will be painting the weights when I get time - always do this on any of my cars with black wheels as black weights seem very unusual /hard to find.

Finding data on steel wheels is hard (see Cuthbert's comments earlier on this thread) so I went with Andy's recommendation - he apparently races on these, has them fitted to the work vehicles and from what I could see were as good as any. Wiped them with ACF-50 as soon as I got home and they will get a wipe with every wash (just like the hinges and any other bit of the Defender I feel like treating Very Happy )

Looking at the pictures posted above - showing Vizla's new wheels and tyres - Is someone having a laugh?

There appears to be enough lead weights on those wheels to sink the bleedin' Bismark. Just look at the pictures and ask yourself "Does that look right"?

Yes you could paint the weights black to hide the visual impact ......
