Wales 2007 Defender 90 Other CSW Trident Green
Is this right or wrong to run the engine to flush
Yesterday I visited a well known Dealership in North Wales and while there I wandered into the workshop where a Defender was having a system flush and antifreeze added, the top and bottom hoses had been disconnected from the radiator and I saw water gush out, the mechanic then went into the cab and started the engine and let it run for about thirty seconds more water gushed out. I have never seen this done before the mechanic said its perfectly safe and the mechanic said that he always does this technique.

Is it safe to run the engine for a short period after having drained the radiator so that the water pump drains the engine or not. And does anybody else do this.

I think it is perfectly safe to do this if it is only for a very short period of time, e.g. indeed no longer than 30 secs. I did this for many years with the diesel engine in my sailing yacht for the winterising service. Cheers, Vincent

overheating wise its ok to run a COLD engine a while 30 secs , its common practice in any garage , only thing I would say I would be more concerned about is most if not all water pumps use ceramic seals which dont like being run dry

better way in do it is to have engine fed by hosepipe as your never get all the old water/af out just draining and running anyway

Depends entirely on the engine. Wet liner engines (aluminium blocks with cast liners) should never be ran without coolant as hot spots in the cylinder liners can develop almost instantly causing damage.

Most diesel engines however will be cast iron blocks or dry liners so less of a problem
