Feedback!
Well had the 18mm blank on for nearly a week now. No MIL light and may be my imagination but appears to be marginally more economical (will see with next fill). What isn't imagination is how much quieter the engine is! Will wait till I get my remap back on and go a size smaller. Shouldn't be too difficult now the studs have been removed and replaced with the ss bolts 10-15mins I reckon.
Hands are healing nicely having ripped 'em to shreds trying to clear the studs to get the blanking plate on last week instead of just removing them!

doesn`t look very promising for my knuckels. Should I remove the expansion tank to start?

MK,

No need! Just buy a bottle of antifreeze and disconnect the pipe at the bottom of the expansion tank it will give you enough room! If you've got some gloves put 'em on! There's lots of sharp edges and it'll save a week of healing! If you've got studs remove them rather than try to get clearance to fit the blank and replace with the bolts! Took me a while and a couple of calls to Robofarmer to get it done but it shouldn't really take more than 30-40 mins first time! If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Job took longer than expected and I had to get vehicle back together to get back to work. Unfortunately all was a bit of a panic and I didn't take pictures. Got 2nd service in 2,500 miles so will have to swap back, will take pictures then if someone hasn't beaten me to it.

On Andrews's photos they are the original studs (not bolts) he has just removed the nuts off them to facilitate removal....
Some vehicles have studs fitted where you just remove nuts to undo, others have bolts that you just extract.

The difficulty of the task depends on whether you have bolts or studs as original fit

If you have studs fitted you have to make sufficient room to pull the EGR Valve assembly clear of the manifold to fit the blanking plate. I couldn't manage this as I have aircon and could not obtain sufficient clearance with all the pipes etc.

Quick call to Robofarmer and he said "Use a star type socket and remove the studs completely and replace with the bolts I supplied!" Makes the job and any subsequent blanking plate fit/removal much easier. Hope this makes sense.

If you've got bolts as standard just whip 'em out retain the gasket and replace with a blank. Job jobbed!

off course the photos is only the idea, normally we make this kind of solution on Gas & oil plant blank/cut-off plates

Mk def no need to take the expansion tank off just try and do the job with engine cold to start with would be best!. If you do end up change,n a plate after a run just wait a reasonable amount of time for engine and water temp to cool a little and then release the expansion tank top slowly for a min then tighten again and then squeeze clip and remove black water pipe out of your way. and you should,nt lose more than a cupfull of coolant .

I know those jobs Very Happy It's usually preceded by my suggestion to my wife that "it'll only take me 10 mins". 2 hours later she comes out to see what the hell has happened, to find me red faced, sweating and cursing as I try to at least get back to the point where I've not broken it.

I need a mechanic's "undo" button. Thumbs Up One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS
