Swapping square fog and reversing light for round: snags?
Hi,

my car has the square reversing and fog light and I think the round ones look so much better, so I want to replace them. Will I run into any snags other than the obvious mounting holes not matching perhaps? Are the connectors the same, will fitting the new ones trigger some kind of weird electrical error, etc? I know my way around a soldering iron, but would prefer to use the standard connectors if possible.

Because we cannot see too many Defenders, here's a few pics to illustrate my intentions.

Now that I look at it: did LR swap left/right on the reversing and fog lights in newer models?

2nd pic is UK registered car which will have fog light on the right (off side) as right hand drive. 2005 Td5 90 XS

I've done a similar job on my 1990 110, the connectors will be wrong, you'll need 2 of these:http://www.autosparks.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=1392

There will be fog light and reverse light connectors on both sides so take your pick. The round lights will cover the holes left by the rectangular ones. 1990 Defender 110 200TDI Camper - now converted to Td5 power

So I guess I will have to order one of those harnesses for the FOG and one for the REVERSE lights, right?

Btw: I thought the square lights were a '130-only thing', never noticed the older 90 and 110 models had them too!

The round fog and reverse light were a part of the changes that came out in 2002 ( steel doors,new dash etc). 2005 Td5 90 XS

Yep 1 harness for each (but they are both the same) 1990 Defender 110 200TDI Camper - now converted to Td5 power

You just need to enlarge the holes drill two M5 holes for the mounting bolts. I get the econoseal connectors off Paul at Lrconnectors on eBay as he's superb to deal with and very helpful http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Land-Rover-Connectors

Ok, I have some good and bad news...

Good: I finally got round to installing the new lights I had lying around for months. I ordered the converter harnesses as per Hazza's post above some time ago, but I found that the new lights wouldn't fit the holes in the mounting plates (I have a 130 HCPU). So I had to order new plates (or modify the existing ones, but new plates are only 10,- each so guess what I ended up doing...). Anyway, life took over and before I knew it, months had passed, but today I wanted to give it a go, but...

Bad: the harnesses don't fit the plugs on the car's harness/loom! Big Cry

The harnesses I ordered, do fit the lights perfectly, but have bullet connectors on the other end, whereas the car has these blue sockets that I don't know what they are called:

The old lights have a connector like this one, that plug in the socket above:

Are there any converters/connectors I can get that fit the car's blue connector? I really don't want to cut the connectors off and solder/cramp on some improvised connectors. I don't mind cutting off the bullet connectors and solder/cramp on a connector that fits the blue socket, but I have no idea what they are called or where to get something like that! Defender 130 HCPU Td5 MY2000

Hmmm, thinking this over a bit more, maybe I could simply cut the connectors off the old lights, and solder them onto the harnesses that now have the bullet connectors (cut off the bullet connectors, of course)? Defender 130 HCPU Td5 MY2000

Ok, time for an update:

I finally got round to sorting this out. As mentionend in my previous post, I went ahead and cut the connectors off the old fog and reverse light, and soldered them to the harnesses I got, replacing the bullet connectors. Some heatshrink over it, job done. Hooked it all up to the car and everything lit up as it should Thumbs Up


I do have a follow-up question though:


Should the new fog and reverse light be mounted to the car using a seal to sit in between the lamp housing and the body? If so, what part number would that be?

I noticed the indicators and rear/brake lights have this seal. My fog and reverse lights came without a seal and I can't seem to find the part number for it!? Defender 130 HCPU Td5 MY2000

Make them. I use butyl pond liner and a scalpel to cut my own gaskets whenever I need them. Available from any good acquatic centre.

None whatsoever, less hassle than asking for part numbers on a forum, ordering and waiting for something to arrive that costs next to nothing that you can make at home for very little effort and possibly out of better material in very little time.

Draw round object on material, cut out and fit job done and "Bob would be your Auntie if he had them lopped off!"
