Advice on fridges!!
Hey all,

I'm looking into a fridge to take when we go camping. It would get used a lot in a year, mainly a couple of weekends and the odd longer period

Having a read around it seems Engel and ARB sit at the top end with a few others but I Really can't justify that kind of money on one Crying or Very sad

What others do people run at around the £100 mark?

I'd be looking at running it 12v whilst travelling and generally plugging in 240v when at a site. I wouldn't be keeping running of the car when stopped.

Just looking for suggestions really and some ideas. I'd love an engal but Big Cry 2006 Defender Double Cab- Zambezi Silver

I have a Waeco CFX permanently installed in the car. Not cheap either.
With a 100 pound cool box you'll probably be drinking warm beer in summertime and licking beer ice during the winter.
With a bit of bad luck your battery runs empty and / or you'll get a headache from the noise of the fans.
Sorry for bringing the bad news...

That's kind of what I though!

I was hoping a few surprises my come up around that area but not hopeful!

Maybe I'll keep my eye open for a used one. I just need to whitle it down to a few first!

Might be interesting for you because of the dramatic euro...
They still have 2 in stock for 550 and it will take around 18 euro to get it to your doorstep. Idea

Cheers for the link. It's much cheaper than I can find it anywhere else. I'll have to have a think.

Yeah, they all seem to be similar in price, I just wish I could afford a bit more!! 2006 Defender Double Cab- Zambezi Silver

Can only support what was said

Engel here, running faultless for 10 years now and used year round regularly both on mains and in-car.

Just to warn you, the mentioned engel is produced in batch once a year so the prices might go up once stocks thin out.

This fridge is actually the best deal you can get, its mechanically/electronically identical to its metal brothers at 1/3rd less. more sturdy as i thought and really a nice bit of equipment.
(i do have the metal 45 turbo something but we bought this one for a friend and after a year of use i am only positive)

Thumbs Up

I've recently had a similar dilemma and couldn't find anything I fancied around the £100 mark. In the end I bought a Waeco RC1200 from Amazon at just under £170.

The fridge runs on 12 volt or mains hook up or gas so depending on how much gear you take camping it's pretty versatile.

I haven't used it in anger yet, it only arrived yesterday but I plugged it in in the house and it rapidly got very cold.

Maybe build quality isn't the greatest, for example, I would have expected some sort of seal around the lid (it's top hinged), and there aren't any lights to let you know it's on and working. It is basically silent on the mains so shouldn't keep you awake at night.

Gets great reviews on Amazon, and that's what guided my purchase.

Good luck in your quest!

Cheers Tatra805, interesting that it's about 200-250 cheaper and is pretty much the same working mechs as the more expensive versions. Thumbs Up

Looking on amazon.de it would be about Euro 559 all in, so around £396, I'm not sure if I'd get hit with VAT on delivery though.

Stickleback, Thats not bad, I'll have a look at that. Thumbs Up 2006 Defender Double Cab- Zambezi Silver

It's the price including VAT, so no surprises there.

Just to throw another variation into the equation.

There are many cool boxes these days which do not require external power.

Igloo boxes work on throwing in frozen blocks or ice cubes. There is an Australian brand but can not remember the name

Have a look HERE for some ideas.

Would certainly cope for a long weekend, indefinite if you had a continuous supply of ice cubes/frozen blocks. £100 should get a large one.

We have a 10+ year old Engel 40L that's been rolled in a previous landy. Still going strong, and we even use it in the house when we have parties. Thumbs Up --

Icy Tek ?

I have a 25ltr and its spot on for a weekend camp and scrapes in just under £100. If I had my time again, I'd go up one size to 40ltr, simply as you can't stand a wine bottle upright in the 25ltr.... well... priorities right?? Jon - 110 td5 [sold]. Currently Defenderless.
