Use levels instead, then press the Ctrl / A / backspace / D / keys, then use a brush to paint in the darks and lights, you can also use the slider at the top of the command palette to soften the effect if you load in Essentials workspace in Photoshop.

If you shoot in Raw you could also use the graduated filter in ACR before tweaking in Photoshop.

i create a curves layer, pull the blacks down and paint back where i need. of course this is just one of many steps in my process! Thumbs Up My 109 thread
