Soft top fixings falling out?
I've noticed a couple of the fixings for my soft top have started to pull out Confused

Looking at the fixing it looks as though the threads have either stripped or corroded and on one there is what looks like corrosion between the stainless steel fixing and the alloy tub meaning the hole has enlarged?

So, first off.... anyone know a good source of replacement fixings?

Then assuming the holes have enlarged? How do I fit them to the existing holes? (Or am I missing something?)

Any help appreciated.

Mike

They are Tenax fittings.

http://www.woolies-trim.co.uk/c-59-tenax.aspx

When I used them on the tonneau cover on my DC I fitted them using small rivnuts into the capping and then screwed the fittings into that. The fittings are 2BA and for the life of me I can't remember what rivnuts I used Embarassed

It looks like you have the self tapping type hence the problem ?

Edit. 2BA is 4.7mm, I am sure I used 5mm rivnuts now.

Ah after a bit more digging mine might be the same, couldn't think how it could be be held by a nut?

How on earth do you get a nut behind the lip on the tub?

Anyway, thanks for the steer....

In my digging I've found a lotus seven supplier of individual bolts (with nuts) that look the same size so I'll give that a go. 2003 Zambezi Silver TD5 110 XS SW overland prepped....

Ah so there is a self tapping type Thumbs Up

Might have to go the riv nut route, how deep would an appropriate riv nut be approximately as there can't be much room? 2003 Zambezi Silver TD5 110 XS SW overland prepped....

Do you still need them as I have a few spare you can have for the price of postage if you like? only about 20 though

This is sadly the problem with some of the hood manufactures and why I went with Exmoor that sits lower like series hoods. The capping rusts badly on land rovers anyway so drilling holes doesnt help matters, especially if they dont paint to seal the holes before fitting

There designed to fit nuts to though but as you cant on this type some people have a go threading it in which doesnt work long term, my local garage use rivnuts to do it as stated above when they used to do this type hood.

Hope this helps and if you do want them drop me a pm and there yours Defender puma dormobile camper

I would use zink plated steel rivnuts to avoid bimetallic corrosion... and treat all joints with Duralac (or similar). The Duralac makes a waterproof seal and also sets quite hard, so acts a locking agent (since you can't screw the fittings in too tight or the rivnuts will rotate). In general, I would also spray ACF50 (or similar) behind the cappings twice a year to reduce corrosion from behind Thumbs Up

Sorry, couldn't resist sticking my nose in Whistle

p.s. if you don't have a rivnut tool and have a bit of time, there's instructions how to make one on this site Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...

Thanks for the info and tips gents and indeed Tom for your offer of fixings.

I have managed to find and order a few which should hopefully sort me out.

From the comments it looks like the only reasonable option is to go riv nuts so have just ordered the laser kit from amazon £23 will hopefully be up to the job.

I'll take the advice regarding coatings and prevention as I want this to be a long term relationship. aCF50 was one of the first things I purchased after I bought the 90 from the advice on the forum Thumbs Up 2003 Zambezi Silver TD5 110 XS SW overland prepped....

Boyd why does the same HUGE image of your truck appear each time you post? Maybe it's my 'pooter' settings but it does make it difficult to read your postings especially when you add another photo.
