Just got back from 11 day trip to a flat battery...
I have been away from my Td5 for 11 days, its been sat at home. I knew something was up when I got a battery disconnect and low battery voltage warning by text from the Skytag on Friday (phoned my son who assured me it was still on the drive!)

Came to move it and the battery was completely dead. Not even a dashboard light came on when the key was turned.

I hooked it up to my CTEK 7000 and the alarm and horn started sounding intermittently, but it would not let me disarm it. So I have disconnected the battery and am currently trying a recondition charge on it.

Is there anything that might be wrong that could have killed the battery so quick? its usually fine even after a month on standing.

I will hook the battery back up tomorrow after the recondition charge has finished. Hopefully I can deactivate the alarm! 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

My TD5 had a phase of running the battery down, but I wasn't using very often. However, it did seem to go down quickly.

I have a couple of CTEK chargers so use one of those to keep it topped up. I've also been using it more often lately and haven't had the battery issue for a while.

Perhaps they just don't like be neglected..Wink

Perhaps an obvious question......How old is the battery? If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Thats a very good question, and I have no idea. Its a Land Rover branded battery, and its been in there since I bought the car 2.5 yrs ago. Its a 52 plate, so what chance the battery is 12 yrs old? The recondition charge seems to have brought it back up.

I did have the same problem on one of my subaru cars but was told the tracker system with movement censor and txt
could only be left for a week without being linked to some charge system or being driven as they take alot of battery life.
this was a problem for me as it was my weekend car and sometimes I didnt drive it for more than a week.
They did change the battery twice under warranty though.

I would expect a Td5 battery in normal use to be good for about 10 years (my Disco2 battery lasted 11 years, on a winch-fitted vehicle), so it is likely that it is the original battery (probably a Delphi, black, with no particular identifying marks). if so it is probably on the way out, and your event is unlikely to indicate a fault with the vehicle.

See how it goes, but prepare to buy a new battery.

Yes it is a Delphi, and it does look like its been there from new.

Now thinking it might be time to install a twin battery setup. I've been meaning to do it for a while and have a Traxide unit sitting in the garage that came out of my D3.

What's the opinions on Optima Red/Yellow or Odysey batteries? I have seen plenty of installs so it all seems to fit ok. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

Numax is what I bought a few years back after several recommendations

Someone on here a few days ago mentioned they had difficulty fitting Numax into a TD5. Might be worth checking.

I'm starting on a twin battery setup and Odyssey (around £210 for the PC1500) look favourite at the moment, but still a little expensive.

I have seen a GMB battery tray that will take the Bosch S5 batteries (which is what is in at the moment) so might be a way to go. The Bosch S5 was around £100 from Costco.

failing that, how old is your battery ? have you tested it ?

is the alarm / tracker / immobilizer running it down ?

Easiest way to test for current drain from the battery is buy one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/230939972336#ht_712wt_959 normal current drain should be 20 milliamp which is 0.02 amp that is perfectley normal. Any more and you will have a problem after a few days I know from experience my tracker was pulling 1.00 amp when charging the internal battery so it dont take much working out that it would drain the battery around 3 or 4 days another way to check is with a multi meter with DC amps on it and the leads placed in the correct terminals is disconnect the neg lead from the battery and place one lead from the meter on the battery and the other to the battery lead and see what the total current drain is start pulling fuses and see what circuit is dragging your battery down My bet would go on the tracker On a defender with radio presets, clock,and alarm/immobiliser, instruments and interior lights which is fuse 30 10 amp will pull nearly 2amp with the door open and light on close the door interior light goes out drops to 1.3 amp then when the immobilser kicks in it drops to 0.5 amp thats for the total circuit, so when I go away and leave it for a few weeks I pull that fuse and come back to an alive battery but as I stated check your tracker current draw just disconnect the tracker and do a reading
