Took blackwolf's advice to strip down and lubricate the linkages while installing the bushings on my 2007 vehicle. Thre was not too much dirt/debris in the linkages, however the lubricant originally applied had deteriorated into a flaky/powdery material and no longer appeared to have any lubricating qualities.

The pivot ball for the gear shift lever had deep scores or channels worn in it by the plastic cage and the ball was split due to the shaft expanding as it corroded. The corrosion appeared to be due to water sitting in the rubber seal boot that keeps dirt out of the linkage but forms a convenient 'cup'.

I cleaned the ball up with a file and lubricated everything properly and the shift between gears feels unsurprisingly much better, although I haven't driven it since as I am resolving other issues. May look to replace the gear shift mechanism eventually but I'm hoping that it will last for a while as is.

Bought one of these last week, absolute bargain as the whole assembly new is around £100 and it's only this part which wears. It made me realise how good the gear change used to be

Did this today.

Haven't heard the 'crick' from 1st to 2nd once over a good drive. Thumbs Up

I didn't need to loosen the forward left bolt (the one that needs the UJ for your socket), I just rotated the whole assembly instead... When you get there you'll know what I mean.

So yeah, these inserts remove a whole lot of potential translational movement, and because there are two they remove rotational movement also.

People who experience no change may be lucky (?) in that their units lined up with the holes already, aaaand the bolts were tight enough for the unit not to go out of place.

Took 2hrs, but I spent a while cleaning things and having a good gander - 1hr is an accurate estimate.

Thanks very much for the images, very helpful! Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

Hi All

Anyone else with positive results with fitting these spacers?

If these spacers will improve the crunch noise/feel when shifting 1->2 gear, this would be awesome and I really need to get this fix done.

I did this modification some years ago and there was an improvement, not massively but it was still better. Bearing in mind the parts are only a few euros and takes around thirty minutes I found it worth it. Thumbs Up I started with nothing and still have most of it left!

I know it's me again, but it's been a while now....

It really is better!

... for me at least, the fact I had quite a bad instance of the problem initially may play into perceived results. Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

Hello

Just made this mod on my Defender. For me it turned out that the four Torix bolts holding the gear lever mechanism in place were way too tight and they were crushing the plastic ball joint stopping the spring from allowing the gear lever to spring over to the third gear position. I slackened them off a bit and fiddled with it until I got them just tight enough for the action to work properly. I cleaned and lubed the whole mechanism and added the spacers. I will repost back!

Yeah, IMO it's a bad design from Ford.

By rights it should only be three bolts to hold that bit of plastic that provides the retaining force and friction.

With four one will always be redundant and finding the right balance between a loose feel and the problem you had can be a chore.

Similar reasoning to why tables with four legs often wobble, but those with three are 'self-balancing'.

This stuff is taught to mechanical engineers - indirectly at least... Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

is it two bushes or four bushes mod?
Hi,
Should i only add two spacer bushes (part LR052893) as shown here or is it ok to replace all four with bushes? Cheers. Thanks.

Only need 2.

One locates on the plane, the other determines rotation.

In fact, with more than 2 there is a small chance of them not fitting. Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

Assuming the mount isn't loose as is, you can check if you need/needed them, by looking down the holes as you unfasten to see if they lined up well already. Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...
