Diagnosis please - wheel bearing on an Audi
I've never had a wheel bearing go (had them changed but never heard them) so I need some advice.

I have to drive about 1500 Km next week and the A2 has started making a low humming sound when steering left or driving straight on. Steering right makes it disappear. It's getting worse and you can feel it through the gas pedal at certain speeds. Steering hard left (not right) at some speed makes a light knocking sound.

The tyres only a couple of years old, look in good condition and are evenly worn.

Can I be (almost) 100% certain it's a front (right?) wheel bearing?

No Audi garage has time to do the work so I need to get the parts for our local one.

Cheers for any insight Bow down

Whatever you do to one side it is 'good practice' and the prudent thing to carry out on the other to prevent undue stresses on the older item. My advice would be to do BOTH fronts.

Sounds like it....have you jacked up the front end and rotated/spun the wheels and see if there's any lateral play in the wheels themselves?
It can be very difficult sometimes to detemine whether it is front or rear due to sound resonation through the vehicle. Jacking it and doing the above may give you a pointer. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

I checked about a month ago when I put the Summer wheels on but couldn't feel any difference between L and R (slight play in both - not sure what's normal). It's got a lot worse since then so I'll get off my backside and check again tonight Thumbs Up Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

What you have described is classic wheel bearing symptoms. You can't always feel play. Sometimes the bearing race has become pitted and this generates the noise. Easiest thing to do is change both sets, otherwise you'll never be happy not knowing.

All done today - picked it up and an incredible difference, like a new car.
Only downside is they need a part to fix the ABS/TC tomorrow... and an A2 without TC in the rain is like a go-kart on a skid-pan Rolling Eyes Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
