Advice wanted for fitting a 2 inch receiver hitch.
Hi All

I'm finally getting around to fitting a safari equip receiver hitch this weekend, but just doing a pre- assembly test and I have a couple of queries to anyone who has done it before.
(Td5)

1) where it mounts to the rear face of the crossmember, do I use all 6 bolting points, and any ideas of torque?


2) mounting from underneath into the rear crossmember into the captive nuts, the bolts supplied appear too big/wide. I guess back to using the originals from my removed tow hitch?

3) Any fitting advice for the side arms, which I guess mount where the lashing points were and onto the side plate of the hitch. Short dog leg to chassis?

Aside from that, it looks really well made and everything lines up perfectly.

The bolt kit that comes is a generic bolt kit.

Some of the bits you won't need. You may find that some of the bolts you do need are not included in the kit.

All 6 bolts are used for the plate, along with the bolts underneath.

If you have captive nuts in your crossmember then you won't need the nuts.

My kit didn't have the bolts for the underside of the crossmember.

When offering up the arms you think they won't fit, but they will. Again, my bolt kit didn't have the long bolts that fit through the Jate mounts on the chassis. As for which way they go, as they are shaped, you can just make out from the photo. I mounted both sides the same with the dogleg near to the crossmember. This puts the whole length of the arm against the chassis. It may appear that it's not going to fit, but as long as it's all loosely assembled, it'll be fine. Once tightened everything gets pulled into shape.

As I had removed my standard towbar, I already had these non-included bolts, so no big deal for me.

When you fit it, fit it all loose to start with otherwise you'll find the holes won't match up.

As for torque settings, I used the towbar ones.

4 smaller bolts on crossmember plate = 100nm
2 large bolts on crossmember plate = 240nm
3 bolts underneath crossmember = Didn't know this, so did them at 100nm
2 bolts to chassis = 55nm
2 bolts arms to receiver bracket = 100nm, didn't know what this was so matched to other bolts.

One final thing, I used copper grease on the faces of the brackets that attach to the crossmember.

I also sealed mine to the rear crossmember to stop water getting trapped between the parts and causing rust.

I would suggest using some grease inside the receiver as well.

anything I fit I paint the mating surface with underseal with added waxoyl and enough to make sure it oozes out of the joint to seal it

Thanks everyone. Great detail and all my queries resolved. I hadn't thought about sealing between plate and crossmember. I've fitted mine on a test run, without the side arms, and all fitted really well. The only little grumble is that I also had to use existing bolts for where it attaches underneath and only have the existing rusty jate bolts for the side arms. Really I would have preferred new bolts all-round. Brendan perhaps you could send a bit of constructive feedback about this when you see the guys at Safari Equip next? Thumbs Up

Good afternoon folks. I am in need of a tow hitch and rather like the look of these 2" receiver versions. Does anyone know if they are type approved for towing? I was looking at the Southdown tank guard a while back and apparently that is not approved for towing.

I jut do not like drop hitches... Rolling Eyes

Mmm, I’ll leave it to others to go into detail about the legalities (they’re non-type approved, age of vehicle, N1 or otherwise etc.), but looks hardly come into it.

I’ve a 2” receiver - three, actually - on the front of my Defender, helps me push my boat trailer into awkward spots more easily. On the other hand, I would not be particularly comfortable about actually towing the same boat with a receiver hitch. Just me, perhaps…

Yes having done a little more searching around the web has pretty much said exactly the same thing. As far as I can tell the guys over the pond use receiver hitches all the time so they must be pretty strong. It does sound like getting the hitch type approved is an expensive thing to do for a manufacturer. So I understand the lack of approval.

Not towing your boat with it must mean it is a fair sized tub... Shocked

Will make some calls in the morning...

We tow on non type approved tow hitches.

This includes a caravan and 3.5 tonne trailers and have never had a problem with them.

Mine is not type aproved as is not required on a commercial vehicle, but have towed many tonnes with it and am very happy with it. I've basically glued my receiver to the rear crossmember with sikaflex, as I did with my td5. I choose to do this for the added strength and to stop a water trap between the two components.

This is good to know. My 110 is non-commercial so this is not a problem.

Out of interest which receiver hitches do you two gentlemen have? Opinions?

Understand completely about the silkaflex sealing, a good idea... Thumbs Up
