We toured Iceland by car back in 1997 and it was a great experience. We rented a Suzuki Vitara and by the end of the two weeks it had taken a bit of battering from stones hitting the bodywork and a smashed light and wing mirror glass......really glad I could just hand the car back at the end of the journey. Expect a few dings etc on your Disco 4!

Its not easy to get your car out there, From the UK the easiest is to put it into a container at Immingham wait a week and a half then fly out collect it at the docks in the Capital (cant spell Recyavic not looking it up at the moment), there is a car ferry service that runs via the Fario Islands to Norway but from the UK this ment Aberdeen to Shetlands, Shetlands to the Fario's to long and a lot of waiting arround and the ferry comes into Iceland on the extream East of the isle and i have been told that take 12hrs solid driving to get over to the west where the capital and airports life ect are. Hope you have deep pockets it is horrendsley expensive out there fuel in 05 was £4litre a small beer cost £8. You also have to fill out tempary import documents and are only allowed to have the viecle there a max of 6weeks. If you need shipping info i can give you the details and as your not from the uk the container ship also sails via Rotterdam so you could load up there instead of Immingham. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

It's a long journey, but consider it a cruise! We went a couple of years ago, and hired a Ford 4x4, went see the geysers, and the big (huge) waterfall at Gulfoss, followed by a bit of a tour. Spent ages driving out of the city lights at night hoping to see the Northern Lights, but they must have been shining somewhere else for the duration of our trip. Beautiful place. Looking at the ferry we can either go via the Faroe islands for three days or bypass straight to Iceland. The price is the same either way. I'm airing on the side of not missing the opportunity of seeing the Faroe's but has anyone else been?

Hi Ian,
I have been to Iceland in Jul/Aug 2011. In total 3 weeks which means: 1 week travelling, 2 weeks on Iceland. It is a long way with your own Landy but worth to make this tour. I was driving with a friend and our 2 daughters but took the ferry on my own. The others took a direct flight to Keflavik for around 300 € return. There are very resonable tickets available from AirBerlin (Duesseldorf) or GermanWings (Cologne). It is saving some frustration and also costs as a single bed in a shared 4 berth cabin is less expensive than taking a full cabin in high season. The only disadvantage is a nearly 800 km tour at the first and last day from the East Coast on Iceland to Keflavik airport. But this can be done within one day as the days are long and sunny in summer. I used my Garmin with a great free topo card from ourFootprints: http://www.ourfootprints.de/gps/mapsource-island_e.html. I returned new roads and findings to ourFootprints as some other users so the card is really excellent value. You can purchase excellent printed maps or a road atlas on Iceland for less money compared to Germany. A cool new site for planning and map is this one: http://i.ja.is/ Camping is really cheap as you pay per person only (about 6,60 € for an adult; kids 1/2 or sometimes free). You MUST be prepared for rain and very cold wind so I slept most nights with a cap in my roof tent. Petrol stations are rare in the highlands so in case you plan touring without a return to the ringroad take some 20-40 l extra fuel. Majority of fuel stations are not manned to yo MUST have a VIAS card with PIN; other wise NO fuel! Import of food is limited to 3kg per person, including liquids. Supermarkets are available in larger tows. Thanks Bernd, I'd already got your videos saved as favourites on you tube.
I'll gat back to about the nav waypoints. I'm probably looking at paper maps to be honest and a old farming hand held for grid references. Ideas planning on using an iPad for nav but to be honest don't know where to start with it,  |

excellent paper maps are ISLANDSKORT 1:300000 or take the KORTABOK Road Atlas 1:300000. http://nammi.is/kortabok-1300000-p-2181.ht...rrency=GBP The Road Atlas contains also river crossings marked with a "V" in a circle, a km scale as well as coordinates at the map border and is more like a topo map. The Road Atlas costs 3.650 ISK (ISBN 978-9979-3-2753-0) and is worth the money and an excellent Iceland souvenir.
